Hey guys.
Just trying to figure out all possible way to maximize my success with astrophotography and i think i may have found another hole in my setup.

I currently autoguide through the hand controller, and i have a vague memory of the man who sold me my mount saying that there was a significant delay in doing this way....

I currently use a DSI to autoguide (want to get everything else down pat before i break out my ST4 (Thanks Houghy, still in great nick). I was just wondering how can i do this, do i need to make a special RJ11 to serial cable then buy another serial to USB converter? I can only find a pin out diagram in my mounts manual, and im not exactly sure how to hook up the other end.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks yet again
Scott

What mount are you using - does it have a dedicated autoguider port?

Im using the Skywatcher EQ6-Pro mount, it has a dedicated "st4 type" port.

Sorry, i should have mentioned that:ashamed:

You need a guide port adaptor for the other end - a lot of people use the Shoestring GPUSB interface device

http://www.store.shoestringastronomy.com/products_gp.htm

You can also get the cables from him with the correct wiring for the EQ6 autoguide port - or follow the instructions on his site to make your own.

I don't believe a USB to serial converter will work with the autoguide port.

My wallet already feels lighter.... :)

Do you think this is a significant problem with my setup? Considering my other questions regarding guidescope rings for my guidescope, which do you think would be the higher priority.

Thankyou for your reply
Scott

Scott,

I'm on the same journey - I don't think autoguiding and low cost can be used in the same sentence!

I'm not sure what you have already and I'm no expert but I don't think you can use the ST4 port without some sort of interface product - I think it is possible to make your own if you are handy with electronics.

Guidescope rings are next on my shopping list!

Sorry, what i meant was do you think that guiding through my hand controller is a significant detriment to my current setup? Significant enough for the GPUSB to over ride my the guide rings that are currently at the top of my extraordinarily long shopping list.

Thanks again
