Details are sketchy, but apparently a traffic copter for the Ch.10 (?) news last night found themselves 'attacked' by a green laser, live on air. The commentator even shouted "we're under attack!" (very dramatic) when it happened.
They then watched the police investigating this on the ground, from the air.
Turns out the green laser was from a piece of 'artwork' at an exhibition, firing a rotating green laser onto various materials, which by way of reflection found itself momentarily aiming at the traffic chopper.
This art exhibition was (apparently) sanctioned by the relevant local council.
Brilliant :D
Regards,
Rob.

The Sydney Morning Herald article about it: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/art-attacks-reporter-not-lasers/2008/04/23/1208743030294.html
Looks like we better ban outdoor art exhibits just in case.
Cheers

well i signed the online petition - probably need to get some action happening with respect to educating the population how the lasers are responsibly used and stop the bad press.

We were at the New Years celebrations at New Quay in Melbourne Docklands about 3 years ago and I noticed they had green lasers producing pretty patterns on the ground and sides of some buildings. If you stood on the pattern on the ground, you could look directly at the laser producing the pattern....I remember thinking to myself at the time "and they are worried about me pointing my 5mW at an aircraft 1000m away, but this thing is about 10m away and is a hell of a lot more than 5mW". I really hope they do something about public displays like this one.
I also noticed a couple of articles in Sky at Night last year were some advertising gurus had wanted to put in a laser tower that would produce an "artificial" aurora in order to attract tourists! Fortunately, they were able to quash the project. Now what would happen to an aircraft coming in to land if it flew into the path of such an instrument capable of creating an artificial pattern in the sky visible to everyone in the town!

Well if the weapon of mass destruction, sorry laser pointer, was such a problem why in the blazes did the copter hang around to watch the police search.
surley if the threat was to great for the pilot they would have left and headed for saftey.

yes you would think that is logical, but sadly like the Iemma & Co there is little logic or reason, ch10 probably thought it was a good idea to hang around and report the incident fully and hopefully catch the people responsible live on air, imagine, for once ch10 news beating ch9 or ch7! that's the real reason why they go to air @5pm, they know they have no chance of beating the others in ratings!
Hi Alchemy, it's the usual way for these stations.
"Never let the facts get in the way of a good ratings story"

Personally I think the Gov't should ban all green light - except for traffic lights. Then again - ban those and you'd have alot less accidents! What about it Premier?
