i think youd have to really hard push a dslr image to capture that much detail;) were just trying to keep up with the ccd imagers.

This object is difficult to get detail in both the faint arms and the inner spiral.

Thanks Steven, you are the first to post an image of those two galaxies that I know of.
James Dunlop saw NGC 1553 but thought that NGC 1549 was a star.
He wrote "A rather bright nebula [1553] about 1’ diameter, very faint at the margin, gradually bright to the centre: a small star north, and another south, both involved in the margin of the nebula. A group of very small stars [including 1549] north"

It's not surprising there are not too many images of this pair. Most ellipticals are bland objects and not worth imaging.
