Hi Phil

I saw a few episodes of Cosmos on the Ovation channel more recently & I'm a bit dissapointed I didn't get to see all of them

I like Carl Sagans way of presentation even tho it's a bit dated(1986 I think)
It's my birthday soon & I've put the DVD set on my wishlist

Cheers
Bryan

The original series first aired in September 1980. It was then, and still is, my favourite documentary series of all time. Dr Sagan had a personal delivery style that was as infectious as it was informal - not for everyone (he lulls my wife to sleep) but I love it.

There is none of the modern (and well-inferior) Discovery Channel-esque style that relies on constant visual battery, thump-in-the-face drama and repetition to get a point across. Sagan merely relies on the intelligence of the audience to absorb what he has said without belting them with it. It's a great change. He was a SCIENTIST, and yet he possessed the rare quality of being able to convey it to the laymen in their own terms.

As stated, it is dated a little - but the overall splendour of the presentation is well worth the time it takes to watch it. You won't be sorry you did.

Hi Phil.

I was lucky enough to receive the DVD boxed set for my birthday last year.

It's absolutely outstanding, and as good as I remember from watching it on tv in the early 80s.

Yes...a little dated in its appearance, but still highly relevant and a wonderful testament to a man of such great intellect and talent.

Shakespeare is dated and yet his plays are read and watched by millions.
The latest addition was updated not to long before his death.
I watch some of the episodes every couple of months or when there is not much on the box.
They are still worth watching.

Ps I forgot to mention he is my Astronomical Hero;)

Great coincidence with this topic! I'm planning on buying the box set this Monday afternoon after my last midsemester exam. I've been watching a bunch of the Cosmos clips on YouTube over the last few weeks and just can't get enough of it. Great stuff!

I went to the JB Hi-Fi in the city today to finally buy the boxset of Cosmos that I've had my eyes on for a few weeks, but it was gone!! All that waiting for exams to be over for nothing. :( I also couldn't find it in any of the other DVD shops in the city. Guess I'll have to order it online.

Darn.

The DVD set is simply brilliant, Carl Sagan was an integral part of Astronomy during his time. The cosmos series is his best work. But he did HEAPS..
