Truly a fantastic picture:eyepop:just what it looks like from my place;)
Did you notice the lighter streak of nebulosity going from bottom center to to right?
I wonder if this is the trail of stars and matter between the LMC and the Milky Way?

Wish it looked like that from my skies! I think I like the SMC photo even better, in one of the links at the bottom of the page, with 47 Tuc beside the SMC.

hehe, now i'm really jealous Ron! ;) yep, i think i see the stream of material being ripped off by milky way! i read long ago that was visible to eye from some places!!?, must admit ive never seen it naked eye tho, like a zodiacal light type thing, awesome!
yeh i like them both programmer! :)

ahh, thanks Doug, but pic is credited to ESO as well tho, thats what threw me :D well congrats is in order maybe!

I'm not sure about perspective, but could that outer cloud actually be also the stream of greedily siphoned material heading towards our galaxy, but head on, and coz its closer, seems larger?
even amongst galaxies its kill or be killed!

gotta love these modern digitals! where will it all end, we find the LMC is actually 50 d in diameter size

whos up for the challenge?, and what is the record for the previously imaged wide field showing full extent of LMC environs i curiously wonder
cheers

Yeah kearn - Antu "works" for ESO I think.
I'd lke to think that halo is the faintly imaged remnant of the LMC's spiral arms being, as you've said, devoured!!!

what a great image! Where I do my observing (my back yard) the LMC is neatly hidden away in the pesky little problem called "Brisbane City Light Pollution"
