LOOKS GREAT MIKE. YOU HAVE DONE A WONDERFUL JOB

My only criticism is that the font is a little small in the posts. :D

Great Job Mike & Terry!!!

I like all the links on the left. I always forget that this site has a Home Page! Now it is available right here in the Forums.

Even the smilies are easier to get to.

WOW! I am going exploring to check everything out.

Well done

Looking good Mike & Mojo. I don't have to scroll tooooo far to read all the blurb.
PTN. For all those that are still running IE, why not try Firefox for 'TABBED' browsing. That way you can have as many links/pages/photo's open at once..... even the 'Smilies'.
If you have 2 or 3 photo's open, you can do an add hock 'blink' test. Good fun. Plus, you can change your font size/colour, to whatever you like :D L. ;)
ps. No probs. with load speed either. L.

Seems toooo cold and squishy with the white background and small font.
Most of the posts are taken up by the avatar strip and sigs.
Bigger fonts in the post and smaller avatar strip might have been better maybe.
Its the posts that are important.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
If the site appears slower, it's just coincidence. The server slowed down just as we were updating the site.

I don't see how the fonts in posts could be smaller. They look the same size to me? Other font sizes for headings, etc. has changed but I didn't change the size of the post font.

Edit: yeah ok, it was smaller :) CSS mishap. Didn't even notice. Better now?

Thanks Ken. You have no idea how pleased I am that you said that :D

Hey Terry, My font size hasn't changed. Why doesn't everyone just switch over to Firefox. They'll have full control over the font size/colour etc with it, like we do! Great work. I Like. :2thumbs: :D L.

Mike, I feel that all the links at the left of the page would be better placed (in a non scrolling section if possible) at the top of the page under the Iceinspace banner with fly out submenus. That way they wouldn't scroll off the page and also wouldn't encroach on the space available for posts. Take a look at the way the main items are presented on the Telstra Bogpond site for an example although theirs still scroll with the page.

One easy fix Slick is to reduce clutter in our Sigs. I've just cleaned mine up to help. It's a start anyway!

davidpretorius
25-07-2005, 12:14 PM
I agree with acroplite's point and and to avoid the problems of using frames with search engines, if you set the content to be in a <div> element with the overflow setting, then you can get you top row and left column to stay where they are. We only scroll through the content ie forum section.

for example. have a look at a quick job i did for a mate at http://vichomes.com/homes.aspx

The top stays here, but you can scroll throught the content

This is for asp or asp.net, not sure for php as i have done no programming in php at all!

DIV id="divDetails" style="OVERFLOW: auto; HEIGHT: 395px" runat="server"

ving
25-07-2005, 12:32 PM
not bad dave. we could keep the banner up the top...
there are of course proas and cons to that. it'd be prettier for one but youd lose text space... the info on the left overflows the page on a typical screen setup so that would need to be reduce or it still needs to scroll.

25-07-2005, 12:40 PM
Thats the go Ken

The main reason for my comment was because of the small fonts. The posts seemed to be insignificant in relation to the avatar and sig strips.
Mojo altered the font size and the scale is much better.

Robby
25-07-2005, 12:40 PM

I also think/feel but then again it might be just me, that the lil online icon thingy should go back up to beside the members userName. It looks out of place where it is now. Having it beside the userName emphasizes what it is.

Love the Doh! icon

It's slower for me..But like Terry said, it's to do with the server. The font look's the same to me, no probs there. I have to scroll left/right a little bit to see the whole page, but only to read a thread, or reply. The site menu box top left...is very hard to read the text over the blue colour. But when you put the mouse cursor over it, when the text light up, it's only just readable. I dont mind the new look, but I didn't mind the new look either.

25-07-2005, 01:32 PM
Hi guys, thanks for the feedback so far.

That was just last night, the server seemed to be slow at the time. Seems normal for me today.

As mojo posted, the CSS for the posts was accidently overwritten, but it's back to normal now. So if it looks any different than you remember, it's your imagination :) It's now the same size as it always was.

Thanks for the suggestions - i'm not inclined to change the design again now, i'd prefer to live with it how it is for a few months and see if there's major need to change. I just don't have time to go through another redesign cycle right now :P

You've only lost 180px due to the left bar Robby, and the width is now variable with your resolution so if you maximise the window or run a higher resolution, you'll get more room for forum display. I'm sorry you don't like it, but integrating the site and forums was more important than losing a small amount of real-estate.

Mojo will be most upset that you don't like his new LED graphics :D

Get that smug look off your face Terry! :D

Thanks again for your feedback, please keep it coming. Any major disasters or major dislike may be addressed, but for now I need to get back to doing some real work for a while :)

I've got that scroll left/right thing too but I'm not changing resolution again.

I like the info/links down the side. They will remind us of other things while we read down through the posts (The Camp for example hehe! Hint, Hint).

Would be nice to have some Astro pics down the left side in the loooooong blank area though!

Generally, I like it!

It's working (so far) Now running at true coloue 32 bit, but still at my original 800X600 On start-up having 3 different splash screens coming up saying you need to un-install this...cant find driver for that etc etc lol. Overflowing div's would be nice if all browsers handled them the same. I was playing around with overflowing the post area for very wide posts last week, but internet exploder doesn't handle overflow properly unless the div is a of fixed size.

I have no problems with the fonts, but I do have problems with the width, to me having the menu on the left hand side makes the forum feel quite squishy and restricted. You know the feeling you get on a crowded bus when people just keep moving closer and closer to you and you have no where to move? no..... well feels like that :P

Now I have to go out and buy a 19" Monitor to get the full screen back again.

mojo, sorry, you obviously missed the sarcasm of my post. With the comments on size of fonts, i was having a go at the people that thought things were too small, too large, too round, too square, too blue etc

i was suggesting that we "upgrade the lot to 800 x 600 resolution, insist upon people using ie4.0 and windows 95. have it in blue and white, but don't forget the smileys"

Terry, i think from memory? that Konquerer uses the same open source unix/linux code/core to put their gui on as safari, not completely sure. Safari is cool - you can get it to emulate at least 5 other browsers (including Konquerer, IE - and even firefox in the latest version I think?) using a command line/terminal window - in fact simultaneously! great for optimising a site for all the browsers ;) I have worked a little bit for a little web design biz in the past - and optimising for all the browsers at once frankly did my head in - especially netscape! (good browser tho) :) so I know whats its like!

Safari uses the Konqueror engine to render html. Apple slap on their own GUI obviously.

But Firefox is the browser of choice. Konqueror is great but NQR. I only worry about Firefox, IE & Konqueror for web design. It's 99% of the browsers.

fringe_dweller
26-07-2005, 06:01 AM
Your right - i found this after i posted that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_(web_browser) but it also said this quote "Some Apple improvements to the KHTML code are merged back into the Konqueror project" at least safari is not a big fat clunker like IE

There is a version of firefox for mac of course, that is quite nice as well :)

Ive done so little of that stuff for ages - my poor old site only works properly in IE - will have to do a bit of rebuilding :( some of the code is not recognised as proper html anymore its so old. maybe i should drop out like evryone else and just get an "off the shelf" site heheh

Mike, Have been in contact with Mojo re; the different "rendering", is that right?, with my Firefox "profiles". Have sent him 2 x screen shots to show him what happens. One SITE MENU,comes out as white print on dark blue, = O.K., the other one comes out as black printing on dark blue = YUK.... This is extremely hard to read. So I use a "profile" that works! :help3: But that's not right, is it? They should all display correctly, ie; the same colours etc etc...Has nothing to do with cache, as mine is cleared automatically, each time I close down.
