The move is finally on! handover of our new property out of town is this Friday, so we are moving on the weekend. I am so looking forward to this!:D
We have 8.5 acres 9ks out of town. As you can see from the attached google earth image with light pollution overlay, the skies should be nice and dark!;) Actually it's within only a k or 2 of my dark sky site I used to drive to.
Once my house sells (It's in the process;)) the money from that will go into extensions on the new place (including an obs, of course!:D).
So as of Friday, it's back to dial up for a month or so until I can get satellite established. ...but that's OK! Dark skies! Woohoo!!!

Hi Al,
Serious sky envy here!
Congratulations on the new acquisition, I bet the dark skies will be phenomenal out there.
Oberon is a beautiful part of the country, gets very cold though, I used to live in the Blue Mountains and it was the favourite place that I have lived so far.
Enjoy the "serenity" and organise a first light star party once your settled so the beers can flow with your fellow IIS associates!
Cheers

Yup!:D Ya just gotta love it when it comes together!;)
I'm looking forward to it!
Tell me about it! I moved 15 times in th six years after I left school as part of my cadetship! Not much wonder I've been where I am for 19 years!:eyepop:...which only makes the move that much harder!
Ahhh, the serenity! (Do I have to buy a bug zapper?). A small star party could be in order at some stage;). In the back paddock is a small shed which is protecting a slab, toilet and washbasin which I guess was the amenities for the clients for the trail rides that used to be run from the property years ago. I bit of restoration work, and the inclusion of a shower and the amenities could have a purpose again!;)
Very good, John! I didn't realise you were moving, let alone going inland! Good the see the obs is underway! Darker skies than on the coast?
Can you see me smiling???:D

Good luck with the move Al.
You may recall I talked to you a while back when I was looking for a place in Oberon and you cautioned me about the lights from the particle board factory in town. I'm now in Kandos (near Ilford/Wiruna). The street lights here are (thankfully) pretty pathetic and the cement factory doesn't seen to emit any light at all, so I'm hopeful for good views once my roll-off-roof observatory is complete.
What's the timeline for completing your observatory? Presumably it'll be a ROR?

I haven't set a timeline on the obs yet. First priority will be to get moved and settled in as best we can. My house in town is in the process of selling so it's a few weeks behind the purchase of our new place. I need the cash from that to fund extensions to our new house and the obs (as well as repay some extra money borrowed so we could buy before we sold;)).
I'm tossing up whether to go for a roll off roof or a Skyshed POD actually! As Oberon's average wind speed is around 24kph compared to Sydney's 8kph I need to make sure the obs is sturdy;). I still reckon I could build it cheaper than the Skyshed POD, but there are pros and cons both ways. Crunch time will be when the money is available!

Same here. You've just reminded me to keep tabs on the winds around here ... could be a deciding factor.
