Hi all,

Spent some time sorting focus and tracking, sorting some issues with guide cam. Really bad night in Perth tonight, high cloud and back end of a cold front but got some workable frames.

Went for something different in this one just because, different for me anyway, my first NGC.

16 x 4mins calibrated in DSS. Might try Iris when time permits

I like the target and would like to give it a go in better conditions.

Enjoy,

George.:D

Just saw Gary's, I guess I will try again!

There's a lot of detail in the galaxy itself, nice job.

Are you using darks and flats?
The background is pretty messy..

Thanks Mike. I'm using flat lights, flat darks and darks. For whatever reason I have to over stretch the image to get any detail out of it, that in turn is killing the background. That's when I process in DSS anyway.

I did the same set of data in Iris and have improved the result, especially the background. I think the difference all happens during the asinh stretch command in Iris, I don't understand what that command does, but when you play with the values (alpha & intensity) of that stretch it makes all the difference. I have yet to find something in DSS to have the same effect.

Thanks again

Hey Eric, thanks. Using my 12" lightbucket (aka light-bridge) and took 4min subs at 800iso. Too much light pollution for 1600 unfortunately. Not using any filters as yet, one of those LPS-P2 that you use might be the go, then I could go to 1600. Then a MPCC so I can use the whole frame! Might have to plant a money tree me think:P
