I like a challenge so have been trying to image some of the Abell PNs. This one is Abell 23. It is conveniently located high in the west in the evening. Other info is:
Name: PK249- 5.1
Type of object: Planetary nebula
Magnitude: 13.1
Size: 54.0"
Right ascension: 7h 43m 35s
Declination: -34° 46' 36"
Constellation: Puppis
My picture is taken with my Genesis CCD at aprox -25 C. Exposures were a mix of 5 and 10 min exposures on 2 separate nights. Total exposure of 1 1/2 hours with no filter. Darks, flats etc as usual. Field size is 14 x 9 arcmins through my VC200L
Still pretty dim but visible. Maybe someone else would like the challenge?:D
Good catch, maybe a bit out of reach of my wide field setup :)

It looks like a real challenge and fainter than mag 13!

Nice work, thanks for posting, I will see if I can catch it next imaging session too.

Depending on it position relative to the house and the trees I'll give it a go Terry.
It looks like a nice little challenge
cheers
Hi Terry, I had a shot at it tonight before it set behind the trees.
Here is my attempt using a DSI II Pro with a f/3.3 FR and a 13nm Ha filter. I managed to get 40 sub @ 30 seconds for a total of 20 minutes.
Star Atlas Pro refers to this PN as a visual magnitude of 0.0, very dim indeed but a good challenge.
Must have another go at this one
wow great catch Terry well done.

Hi all,
Here is my contribution of Abell 23.
2x10min L -darks
Part of a 10x10min L run tonight. RGB tomorrow.
Does anybody have any idea on the indicated object?
It does appear on the sky survey image.

I couldn't find it in any catalogues, but here are the coordinates from the DSS2 red plate:
RA 7h 42m 38s
Dec -34 38' 28"

PGC/LEDA 2007 catalogue in CDC lists it as PGC 2807064.

You're right - I'm still puzzled as to why Vizier returns an ID for that position that it then cannot find in its own database... :screwy:
Still, the images show very well how deep you can go with patience and skill - I find these expeditions into celestial backwaters very interesting - keep them coming

Brilliant!
I think you are using a very similar CCD chip to me. Mine is a KAF0401E nonAB. This is the same as in the ST7 except some ST7s have the antiblooming version. The sensitivity and noise is similar.
