The 'beginners forum' is a great place to come for tips and advice for those
enthusiasts who are new to amateur astronomy.

A common thread is sometimes, "What should I buy?", "Should I buy this or that", etc.

One timely tip for those in the Sydney basin is to consider attending the South
Pacific Star Party (SPSP) this weekend. There is an entire forum on IceInSpace devoted
to star parties, including a current thread on SPSP.

You can also read more about the SPSP here including finding out directions here -
www.asnsw.com
There you will read "registrations have closed". However, you can still attend and
pay the fees at the registration desk.

The reason for this post is that there would be many experienced enthusiasts that
would agree that to attend a star party and have a look at what other people are doing
is one of the best pieces of advice they could offer newcomers.

Even if you have a small telescope, bring it along. You won't be alone.
If you don't have a telescope then still come along. There are plenty to share.
For example, track myself or Lachlan MacDonald down and we would be delighted
to show you the views through 25" and 18" aperture scopes and help introduce
you to other enthusiasts, including Mike Salway of IceInSpace.

Don't look at what is happening with regards the weather in Sydney or Mudgee.
Anything can happen at Ilford. In any case, it is a great social event.

It's not too late and besides, what else were you going to do this weekend? :)

We would look forward to seeing you there.

Best Regards

I have stepped out of the office so work is now finished until Monday...my countdown clock to SPSP departure has now started...

Just a quick charge of the battery packs and a last check to make sure that I have enough clean underwear and socks for the trip!

Hope to see many of you there!

I am looking forward to your talk on TPAS, Gary. I am sure I will pick up something I didn't know before.

The car is packed, and the alarm clock set. Hopefully, I'll be there before lunch!

Like Gary says, it really is an eye opening experience going to such a great event. There literally is every astronomical contraption under the sun at SPSP. And people are very friendly.

Just one piece of advice, if you are watching your colesterol, steer clear of the donuts.

Either that, or invest in oil futures.

See you there Rod!
