Then try Schott in Sydney - I've rung them & confirmed that they will supply 25.4mm thick Borosilicate (Borofloat 33) water jet cut to whatever diameter you want, within reason. I'm not sure what the sheet size is that they cut from, but unless you're grinding a 2 meter mirror I don't think you'll have problems hehe....

So there shouldn't be any need to panic about Pyrex no longer being manufactured since the Boro will do the trick.

They currently have a sheet in stock (made in Jena, Germany I believe) that they recently imported for someone in NZ who required a blank. But obviously they don't get a lot of demand, so if we can generate some then they will be more inclined to continue stocking it eh?

You can contact them at:

lesley.aitkin@schott.com (lesley.aitken@schott.com.au) or check out the web:

Cheerz.....

Sounds good!
I remember giving them a ring a year ago after a mirror blank but all they could offer me was something like 300-400mm diameter suprex and not 200mm as I was after. Maybe that has changed now?
Great

Yep,

Apparently they haven't stocked the 25.4mm Borofloat in the past, it was ordered in for some guy in NZ and they now intend to keep some on hand. Leslie assures me they can supply cut to size as you demand, so go for it.

I believe it is almost identical to the Pyrex in terms of strength, weight & expansion, thermal shock resistance etc.

I couldn't find any other place in AUS that stocks it apart from this mob. (I don't have any connection with them in just to clarify). I'm just letting folks know since it is often hard to track down this type of stuff because there isn't a big demand etc.

Good luck with your mirror! :D

Cheers, Fred...

Sorry folks,

On perusing my emails I noticed that I put the wrong email address for Schott in my original post. I've edited the original post to correct the contact email. Sorry for any confusion.... :P
