What's your top 10 sky highlights??

Hi All,:hi:
So you have justed started out or have been around a while:whistle: In this Astro stuff.

What are the 10 best things you have seen in the sky so far?
No not what you want to see, make that another thread.
I'll start,

1. Leaonids meteor's in 1998 and 2000. Fireball storm in 98 and more Metors than i could count in 2000.

2. Milkyway from a dark sky location.

3. NGC 104(oh 47tuc:) ) in a 14 inch with a 31mm Nagler.:eyepop:

4.Saturn in all its glory.

5.The Moon, with all its craters, rilles and earthshine just beautifull.

6.Total solar eclipse. geez the birds went quiet!

7.Eta Carina Nebula with a O111 filter in a wide field eyepiece, with big glass.:eyepop:

8.Halley's Comet in the mornings around late march of 1986.

9.SN 1987 a in th LMC, naked eye supernova, wow.

10. Jupiter and its Moons danceing around it.

this is tough...

in no particular order (cause putting them in order would take too much thought and i've only had 1 coffee):

* M42/43
* Tarantula Neb in the LMC with 32mm EP and BB filter
* Omega cent
* Tuc47
* Centaurus A my first galaxy
* The first satelite I ever saw
* Jupiter when I caught to moons in transit (or jupiter any other time)
* Saturn
* Eta Car neb
* The moon alway amazes me.


I could easily swap a few things around like the planetary neb in corvus which was my first planetary neb, sombrero galaxy is pretty too and i was stoked to see it for the first time..

you guys have covered most ofmy top 10 between you but here's an addition

the venus transit..it was a big buzz for me

No particular order of preference to these,

1. Comet showmake levy9 impacting Jupiter
2. Halleys comet
3. First total solar eclipse at Ceduna
4. Sky lab crashing back to earth
5. transit of venus
6. 1987a supernova, saw it on the first night about 20mins after discovery
7. M42 through an 18" dobsonian
8. Comet West
9. Scuptor galaxy through my LX200
10.Andromeda through an 18" dob

There are a lot more sights I have seen over 28 years but these are the most significant.

I just remembered another stunning visual observation that would go to my top 10

M42 through a 6 inch binocular scope at last years ASNSW star party. York Opticals brought along this $15000 dollar monster-two 6 inch telescopes coupled together -and allowed people to have a look . Blew your socks away

Off topic I know, but I wonder if you could do that with 2 100mm refractors strapped together? What a pair of Binocs that would be.

Some great lists there, I haven't been into astronomy for long enough to have seen the great ones like the bright comets and jupiter impact etc.

Mine, in no particular order:

1. Omega Centauri through a 20" dob
2. Jupiter through a 20" dob
3. Tarantula through a 20" dob
4. First time seeing Saturn in a telescope (a 10" dob)
5. Venus transit (really put things into perspective)
6. Winter Milky way from a dark site
7. Scanning sagittarius and scorpius with binoculars and a telescope
8. The moon at high magnification
9. Orion, M42 at any resolution
10. My first (and only) view through a PST. I want more!

Most of mine have been covered, the venus transit was one of the big ones, mars being close last year, the milky way from a dark site, Orion's nebula, I really like looking at the plieades (?), but I love watching the space station go overhead thinking about all the speeds invloved; infact all satalite spotting I love doing.
