I really enjoyed my first experience last month and would love to come along this time but it doesn't look good as I have to be up on top of Mt Cootha at 5.30am the next day to take photos for Bicycle Qld. Will see how I am travelling.

:D Great news Ron... I'm looking forward to trying out two new Baader eyepieces we just got on Friday (yes that's why it rained...). My son's on camp tho' but I'll bring along my better half this time

It looks like you'll have some observing companions at home next week after all Ron, that's great news, I wish I could be in 2 places at once!
:P

I was thinking - maybe we should nominate a short list of objects - nothing too hard (ie none of your 14th mag galaxies) but nothing dead easy either, objects within reach of 6-8" dobs under dark skies. Then as we each observe them Saturday night from our respective locations - you guys at Cambroon, others of us at Barambah - we can contemplate our "shared" sky, and those others who are enjoying viewing it at other locations.

What do you reckon?
(or am I finally going :screwy: from 5 months of frelling cloud!)

I'd be in on that too Steve! I'm not sure where I will be observing from yet, but I will be observing from somewhere!

Hi Ron,

I'll try and make it out, I dont think we have anything on?

Hi Shaun, good to see you are getting in to to this, good also to see that Clancy will be out there. Hope to catch up then. Cheers,

Dennis.

Recommendations for objects?? Maybe one or 2 of each "type" of object, eg small star cluster, Glob cluster, galaxy, planetary neb, splitting double stars. Planets?

Here's a couple of quickies off the top of my head:

Double star Alpha Crux

The Blue Planetary nebula

The Sombrero Galaxy (M104)

Other suggestions??

I'll come along for a look!

As i have already discussed in another thread, Im yet to buy a scope, but this will serve as a chance to have a look at the hows and whats of astronomy / astrophotography... Give me an idea of what to aim for..

Alex.

Steve I thought I would throw a few object your way, all were observed many times with my 20cm(8") SCT over the last 18 years so they shouldn't be to difficult.

They are not in order on the sky.
NGC 2808 GC
NGC 3372 Star/Nebula
NGC 4361 PN
NGC 4038/9 Merging Galaxies
M68 GC
NGC 5128 Galaxy
NGC 4945 Galaxy
M83 Galaxy
Comet 8p/Tuttle Observe early as will get low in the sky by about 21:00
NGC 3324 Nebula

That should keep you going for a little while;)

here'to some good observing:astron:

G'day Ron
Unfortunately i have to pike, I've convinced myself to go over to the dark side and head out to Barambah. Ah well we only live once. I am very keen to make it out to your place but it might have to wait till next time. Thank you for the offer.
cheers

Mick,
It was the lure of the IceInSpace Sticker that made you decide to go to Barambah wasn't it.;)
I've put one in my observing folder for you.

Mmm, good list of objects Ron, we might organise this list as a "challenge" at Barambah Saturday night. Counting children (3 currently) we will have 20 people staying that night, should be a good range of scopes to chase that list down - will be thinking of you as we do!

Catch up with you soon Ron ;)

What time are people planning to arrive and set up? 4.30 - 5.30ish?

astroron

Seeing as you havn't been here before its probably better that you try and get here around four oclock, so as you can see other scopes have a chat and a BBQ and then everything is out of the way when it gets dark to start observing.
Will you be staying the night?
Ron

4 sounds good to me.... I may be staying the night, undecided yet... I suppose it will depend on how i feel at the time, I'm the kind of person who gets really drawn into what I'm doing and before you know it its daylight already.... so in the even of a really late night, I'd definitely want to catch a few Zs before the drive home...

Picked up a pair of 10x50 bino's today... So I'll at least have something... and I've narrowed my scope options down a fair bit after 3 solid days of reading....

Went in to York Optical yesterday, had a big talk with the guys in there and left with a 8" Dob and a barlow lense... so I guess I'll see everyone in a few hours... :)
