Eric,

In many listings Gum 25 and Gum 35 are mixed up - no idea as to why (the SAC may know more....)

What you have shot here is indeed Gum 25 aka RCW 40 - the small neb to the lower left is RCW 39 , and the cluster at upper left is Markarian 18.

By coincidence I had a look at this a few days ago - saw a faint spit and decided this is not Big City material. So I'm glad that you show me what I would have seen, if....

Very unusual Eric, it does look a little like a crab and the other neb could well be a lobster. :)

Great looking nebula and luster as well Eric, I agree with Barb & Dave there is a little lobster lurking at the bottom.

Quite a fascinating image, well done.

Magnificent and very clear image Eric. :thumbsup:
Gum25 = RCW40 is about 7' across.

Here is a description of Gum 25 from: "Astronomy of the Milky Way" By Mike Inglis
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=gyV88pNbJRkC&pg=RA2-PT35&dq=markarian+18&sig=sECXFEBTAFHm3q5OwRjKUXxJJ9Q
http://web.mac.com/mdiastro/mikeinglis/Publications.html

Dunlop found the cluster D430 = Collinder 205 = Mrk18 (top right) in 1826.
He described it as: "A group of very small stars of mixed magnitudes, irregular figure, about 3' diameter."
John Herschel failed to see it, hence it is not in the NGC. Collinder and Markarian thought they found it but the credit should go to Dunlop.

Thanks for the info. I had to do test run shots just to find this object as its not listed in my goto handset. now i know it is called RCW40. Yes, not an object for the city people at all.

Thanks Ric. probably because of the surface texture looks like a lobster? now im getting hungry :)

Thanks for the informative info glen. you seem to always find the good info's on objects. i can't find anything :P thanks again.

LOL thanks guys. yes it certainly does. it looks like the crab body without its legs and claws.

ive attached a picture of it :)
