Hi All,
Last night's target -Hoag's Object. (PGC54559)
As the 10" is suffering flexure, the wooden trus has reached the end of its life, I used the 4" f9. (A small service will be held at the cremation of the 10":()

This object is just crying out for the "big boys" to target. The ones with multi $10k equipment that turn out image after image of mag.9 max objects.

Further details on the object at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoag

Details
10x15min L -Dark combined and streched.

I'd love to see any other small scope images;)

Good one, Jeff...

Amazing how you make the ring actually show up in an image taken through a 4" scope...

Nice capture Jeff of a very interesting object, looks like a planetary but actually a galaxy.

Top stuff

Leon

Na, just joshing, actually pinched this off the web, just for fun, its pretty cool though.

Very interesting magnitude 16 object and you did a great job with a 4" scope Jeff.

Wow, it will take some serious focal lengths to get much detail on it.

Attached is from the DSS2-red sky survey, image scale is 5 arc minutes on a side. That would put it just under 1 arc minute in diameter, although Hoag describes it as smaller:

"This object, which appears to be a perfectly symmetrical planetary nebula, was discovered on a 75-minute Jewett Schmidt plate. A perfect halo, 17" in radius, surrounds a diffuse central image." The Astronomical Journal, No 1186

Thanks for the feedback all.
I got into photography to "see" faint objects. I first saw an image of this in a book for sale at A&R, but can't remember the name of the book, borrowed a pen from the counter to write its name down.
I looked it up on digital Schmitt plates. Anything on those plates can be reached by a 4" and time.
There are plenty of strange objects amoungst the fainties.

Nice one Jeff. I will pencil that in for my next dark sky imaging run.

Nice going Jeff... to capture the ring you're doing well.

That one really cries out for large aperture, and long focal length, so the 20" RC boys should be chasing that one. Will have a word with Russ ;-)

Rob
