I am designing a portable, horizontal sundial, which will be fitted with a small magnetic compass to facilitate alignment with the poles. Is anyone able to tell me what the magnetic declination of Melbourne is in 2008, and how much it will vary, and in what direction, over the next five or ten years? (I have no idea of how much it varies over time.)

Go here http://www.ga.gov.au/image_cache/GA6140.pdf for some pretty cool information.
For the type of instruments that you are using, you probably don't need finite information. Magnetic variation year to year is slight.
