Tarantula and Rosette 1st and 2nd March

The nights were clear but the pics are pretty average!!:(

Tarantula in the South allows me to image 10 min subs - it's just such a noisy area of the sky for me!! Better detail than I've got before but still not happy with final results!!

Rosette is on my Northern aspect and as such hovers over the local town lights - as a result subs heavily light polluted.

Both images...6x10min subs @ iso800

Scope: ED80
Mount: SynScan EQ5
Camera: 40D
Autoguided: Toucam/PHD

Stacked/processed using ImagesPlus and PS.

I'm not sure what happened to both your shots, but there's a huge amount of jpeg compression which really detracts from the images. I noticed they're still very large in resolution (1680px wide), so to get them under 200kb they would've required some heavy compression.

Quite a lot of seagulls in the corners too - are you using a field flattener?

I didn't think the Rosette would come up so well with an unmodded DSLR, so you're doing well!

You really should look at getting a field-flattener. The WO 0.8x that Rob (turbo_pascale) and I use is great - it doesn't eliminate ALL seagulls but most of them.

Problem for you might be that it's also a focal reducer, when you wanted MORE focal length not less :)

It turns our ED80 into a 480mm f/6 instead of a 600mm f/7.5.

I love the 40D in comparison to the Pentax I had before (which was a great DSLR too!) - after stacking, images certainly don't need as much processing as I've done before. LiveView works well - focusing has become a breeze now. It's the focuser on my ED80 that is the weak point in the chain now!Got to get a 10:1 down the line.
I find the camera a bit noisy at times, but this may have more to do with the ambient temps I'm imaging at recently:shrug: being Summer 'n all!!!

Doug the Rosette look great. Very nicely processed. It's very faint and quite large so you've captured it very well.

Hadn't realised the Rosette was a so challenging a DSO to capture!
Ignorance being bliss in some cases then!!??;)
A lot of my subs were milky white!!
I may go back and reprocess the best ones.
Tha Tarantula still eludes me!!!!:lol:

Doug you have done well, again, great shooting ;) yep that Rosette certainly is a tough one, well it is for me anyway, but you have captured it well.

If I may say so, I reckon you should not crop them at all and just leave it as a wide field, but that is my personal way of looking at it. :whistle:

Your Trantula is fine too, did you add that extra reddish colour, or was it the way it was captured.

On the whole all looks pretty good with the set-up, and the tracking seems to be spot on, keep em coming mate.

The red in the Tarantula came out the camera!:P (with some minor tweaking in PS - but not too much)
Reckon the 10min subs made the difference on the red front!!

I've got to crop mate until I get my field flattener - seaguls are just too much to deal with! I hate em' - they've always got to go!!

Because of the seaguls I find I have to be careful about centering the DSO as much as I can. Didn't really help with the Rosette as it extends out to the edge of the field!:lol:
