Hi everyone,

The ANU Black Hole Society is continuing with our public guest lecture series this year. To start the year off, we have Dr. Charley Lineweaver who will be talking about a topic he is very enthusiastic about - astrobiology. See blurb below:

Title: Should we expect extraterrestrials to be as stupid as we are?
Refreshments: 5:15pm
Lecture: 5:30pm to 6:30pm
Where: Copland Lecture theatre, H.W. Arndt building 25, ANU Canberra, ACT
When: Wednesday, 12th of March, 2008
Cost: Free

Dr. Lineweaver will review the evolution of the universe and how star formation produces the elements that the Earth and biosphere are made of. He will then review the major patterns of the evolution of life on Earth and discuss the paleontological evidence we have for and against the idea that human-like intelligence is a convergent feature of evolution.

Since this is a Black Hole Society lecture, Dr. Lineweaver will also discuss the controversial idea that black holes are alien life forms.

Everyone is welcome to come along.

Cheers,

Silvie

Ok, ok, I promise to write the transcript as well as get try to get a recording online :p Actually, does anyone have a video camcorder? Then I can just tape the whole thing :D

Charley is an excellent speaker as well - he is very entertaining, very excitable, and engages with the public extremely well. If you do get a chance to come and see this talk, you won't be disappointed :D

Hi guys,

Just a quick update: the talk went extremely well in terms of content. Charley once again kept the audience riveted with his wild ideas and arguments. Unfortunately, due to techincal difficulties, we could not get a recording of the lecture so no transcript will be available. I am looking into asking Charley for a copy of his powerpoint slides. My apologies to those who missed out. I will hopefull have these technical issues sorted out before the next talk.

Cheers,
Silvie
