I've always really liked the texture of the spray paint on Takahashi gear. It's not hammertone, but a speckled, almost splattered texture that is reasonably flat and quite tough. Does anyone know what this paint is, and if it can be bought in spray cans in various colours? I could get it professionally done, but I'd rather DIY.

Is it a powdercoat?

Not being a tak head I'm unaware: show us a sample and I'll probably be able to comment....!

The stone finish paints are what I use when I want a rough finish.

It's not Fleck paint is it? I know we used some of that in my old man's HK Holden....tough stuff it is!

The paint used in the back of ute's and panel vans is generally called chicken sh*t--ask your automotive paint dealer for it by name and he'll know exactly what your after.

there is a form of powdercoat that gives a textured surface. Dulux make it. Find an industrial coatings supplier and they will even have a color chart. I used to work for a paint shop that had the color cards...

I've just taken a macro shot of the polar scope off my Teegul SPII. You can see the finish of the Tak paint I'm on about...

Looks like a Hammerite-type paint...
http://www.hammeriteproducts.com.au/

Sold in tins, but can be thinned for spraygun application.
Hope that helps.

I think i am right in saying that you can put Hammerite over paint but can't paint over Hammerite once its on. Its good stuff.

Looks far more like a dual colour job with a random "splatter" finish than anything else mentioned.....it would be a commercial oven finish and thus (just) possibly a powdercoat, but I doubt very much.

Emulating it would be *** easy: I'd use a deep yellow "pinked" with a bit of sienna and then I'd partially overspray with some toned down chrome oxide green, finishing the effect by a "splatter" application of the CO green - this could all be done with a brush, using a stiff-haired brush or old toothbrush to apply the "splatter" overlay.

Have created an almost identical finish for maquettes I created for a Maritime Museum commission.
