Guy's I commend you on your forum I have been research what type of scope to get for over a year now since we bought my daughter a 60mm Australian Geographics scope, I got the bug not long after that!. We got her another scope just recently it is 75mm Newthonian on a EQ1 mount second hand one off Ebay for $30 (Needs a bit of work on the EQ mount), this has made here really happy.

Finding this forum has help me make my choice on brand and size of scope I am going to buy. I was looking at grinding my mirror and building a 12" Dob, but after reading the post about the GSO 10" & 12" Dob's that Andrews have and seeing the good reports they have been getting.

I have made the decision to get the 12" from Andrews. The boss has taken a little bit of convincing to the get the 12" over the 10" but I said that I wont need to get another one for a long time if I get the 12".

Boy, talk about jumping straight in. You will love that scope but don't forget the cheshire eyepiece to allow you to collimate it accurately so you can really enjoy it.

Keep looking up.

sounds very familiar, i am the same boat as we speak. My daughter (age 5) and I would love to know how you go as we are looking at the 12" with cray and fan from andrews. Let us know when your joint proposal to "mum" works. Remember it is in your daughters best interest to educate her with the best possible means. Your wife will see thru it, but it might work.

good luck

G'day wombat & welcome. You lobbed onto the best AU forum! At least in here you can let loose with a bit of good old aussie lingo...& we'll even understand what your on about!

We also offer technical information as well. :D

The GSO 12" Dob is a good choice, at least you wont get 'aperture fever' in a hurry. Even though I'm not a dob mount fan, (only equatorial's for me) I fully understand why most people go this way these days...cos' their cheaper!

Have fun with the new toy when ya get it!

:2thumbs: Well I am going to place my order with Andrews either tomorrow or friday, and I didn't have to get my daughter involved this time the wife thought it better I spend it on the GSO 12" than on another laptop computer.
Well guy I have been a member of other forums mainly related to computers and you guys here are

did you refrain until after dinner to even touch it or unpack it. I should not call the dob an it, as it must now be a living breathing person.

Dinner whats that :D The delivery driver hadn't even driven off before I started to open it. Already collimated it and done a quick star test (needs a bit of fine adjustment but it is close. The clouds have just started to roll in so it will have to wait till tomorrow. Buy the way there was a cost to my getting the new dob I had to get my wife a new MP3 player and over $250 worth of DVD's (I knew there would be a catch). But it was worth it!!!!:D

before i started looking at getting a scope a few months back, my wife wanted to get her hair straightened. my first response: i love your curls, but if that is what you want dear, by the way what does it cost?: $300. I fell out of my chair! Now that i seriously thinking of the 12" dob with a few little extras = just over the $1000, I am now very ssupportive of her hair.

You and I should should be chief negotiators for the government for getting these scopes past!!!

davidpretorius

does yours have the fan? have read about the collimation, what is the star test?

Wombat_In_Space
16-07-2005, 11:27 AM
Yes it does have the fan, the star test was to see if there was any error in the alignment of the scope, I didn't get a good chance last night as the clouds started to roll in.

Wombat,

Are you alive? how the new addition to the family going. Getting worried something is wrong. Please just reply back saying that you have looked at an upside down dog across the street. The suspense is killing me.

Those upside down dogs are excellent. I especially like the birds hanging upside down from the power lines!!!

I have lost Wombat too. Sent an email and have heard nothing. Hope all is well.

Well I have seen any upside down dog as yet, but I have been busy with a few things for the new family member it now has a protective fitted cover and nearly finished the new base board for it. I will post photos of the new base board once it is completed.
