Camera Damage

Sadly tonight whilst setting up I have damaged my 40D.
I was slewing the scope to it's 3rd alignment star and not watching when the cable to the camera snagged and I have broken the usb plug in the camera. The camera still works but the connector is stuffed. It has sunk into the camera and I'm not game to use it in case it shorts out something.
Not a warranty thing so I will have to get a quote for repairs.

Ouch - that is really awful news Terry, I feel for you. :( Hope you manage to get it fixed without too much bother, and cost. :prey:

Terry, that is so bad, it must have been a terrible feeling, i bet your heart sank when it happened, hope you can get a reasonable repair cost.

Oh noo that is not good news. I hope it can simply be fixed and not cost a small fortune. Now might also be an opportune time to mention one way of getting it fixed, Yun now has modded 40D's - send it over there and with the cooling unit you get a new USB connection, as well as a cooled camera and new modded filter. Just an option thats all, look at this as an opportunity. Ok it will cost around 1500 but look at it this way - it will be the best investment you can make for your astrophotgraphy pleasure.

Got a quote for $140 to get it fixed. Still much cheaper than a new one.
I can't afford the modding option and I like to use the camera as a regular camera. After modding this is more awkward.
I have my little CCD for sensitive work.

Wow – that is cheaper than I had expected, as usually most places just charge $100 for looking at the thing. I’m so pleased that the fix will be (relatively) painless compared to the shock you must have experienced when the damage happened.

Good that you mention that Terry, cos i need to find a place to clean my mums Minolta 7000 AF, its got lots of dust inside it and needs cleaning, the AF won't work because of it

My camera returned from the camera hospital today and seems to be in full working order. HOORAY!
It's cloudy of course:shrug: and the moon is close to full.
The service from the repairers has been good. They are called Camera Service Centre (http://www.cameraservicecentre.powerup.com .au/) and only charged $120 plus postage to fix it. I can only recommend them. The entire process including postage took 6 days.
Now to finish my observatory and use the thing.

A great outcome from an initially traumatic situation. Nice to know these types of repairs are available at reasonable cost.
