Solar Eclipse

The rain stopped, the cloud cleared (mostly!) and it was 2.30pm.

Race inside, grab scope, fit filter, hook up power, attempt to align...won't allow sun!!...grab manual, fix options, align, and there it was!

Bewdy.

Even though its only a partial eclipse in the Melbourne area, its still really cool!!

Here's the eclipse from Warrnambool at 3.15pm.Nikon D200 with 300 f/2.8 lens & baader solar film, iso 200 1200sec@f/5.6.

Yep! Looks awesome! But my EYES!! Phew! There's a reason we're not to look at it without protection. ;) I know, I know...but I have nothing here, and the projector thing is too small. I got mother at home using my binos with the solar filters. She's lovin it.

"Exposure of the retina to intense visible light causes damage to its light-sensitive rod and cone cells. The light triggers a series of complex chemical reactions within the cells which damages their ability to respond to a visual stimulus, and in extreme cases, can destroy them. The result is a loss of visual function which may be either temporary or permanent, depending on the severity of the damage. When a person looks repeatedly or for a long time at the Sun without proper protection for the eyes, this photochemical retinal damage may be accompanied by a thermal injury - the high level of visible and near-infrared radiation causes heating that literally cooks the exposed tissue".

who needs an expensive camera/filter when you've got a sony handycam with magnetic tape (from an old computer disk) :P

It was clear here for about 85% of the time, just had a few patches come
through at the begining but did manage to catch the start. Swapped to
the PST half way through. And I had my 20x80's with solar filters attached.

I know, I know! I only looked for very short amounts of time!! Promise!! :doh:I had to get a look at it!!

After, Rowena came around with her camera solar filter, so I just had a look-see through that. :)

Was clear till about lunchtime then the clouds started to roll in and huge down pour around the time of the eclipse here in Newcastle. Nice to see some pics thanks:)

The weather turned out to be nice and sunny at work in Mornington (just south of Melbourne) by mid-afternoon (although I had been a bit uncertain earlier - but thats Melbourne weather:)).

I took a pair of 10*25 binoculars, my camera (Canon Powershot A560), and the solar-filtered 'Eclipse Shades' (handouts from the 2002 eclipse) in to work.

Around mid-eclipse, I projected the Sun through the binoculars onto card, and was showing that to a couple of workmates. Then, I got nearly everyone in the office to look at the eclipse through the 'solar sunnies'. Many were quite impressed by the sight.

I also got a couple of photos of the Sun while projected (holding the camera in one hand and the binoculars in the other), as well as a photo of the Sun with the sunnies over the camera lens.

I've attached below a copy of the latter photo (just the area around the sun itself, clipped out).
