NGC3324 and NGC 3293

NGC3244 Gabriela Mistral Nebula and NGC3293 Gem Open Cluster in Carina.

Taken on Saturday night with Pentax ist DL

David did a really good job of focusing and framing this one. But I found it wasn't an easy image to process as bringing out the nebulosity in the nebula blew out the stars and the star cluster.

So I had a play with the lasso tool in PS for the first time and I think it helped quite a lot with the overall balance of the image. "Hope it's not too overdone "

A very nice image Barb, nice colour and a framing and composition I haven't seen before.

That Gabriela Mistral nebula is a very interesting object, in your shot it reminds me of a jelly fish :)

Brad Moore did a great long exposure narrow band shot of this nebula with his 12" RCOS a year or so back, it really shows the womans profile, from where the nebula gets its name.

NGC3293 was discovered by N Lacaille in 1752 using a 0.5" refractor at Cape Town and NGC3324 was discovered by J Dunlop in 1826 using a 9" reflector at Parramatta. Dunlop's 9" was equivalent to a modern 6" mirror.

Wow guys, you are taking some stunning astrophotos! Re processing without blowing up the stars, maybe you could try HDR (high dynamic range) processing that Bert's been getting great results with...
