How much are you prepared to pay (or get ripped off) for a 3.5" telescope?

Ebay has this. . .

When I was in the market for a new scope at the end of last year I asked a Sydney scope shop about the Questars and he said "Forget it, they are not very good for anything except as pretty ornaments".

Interesting comment from a scope shop! :confuse3:

A questar was my all time favorite scope back when I was 13 or so. Fell in love with the way it looked I guess. There not good compared to today's standards, no.

I noticed it hasn't even hit the reserve as yet.......I reckon it will get there & sell! Nostalgia LOL.

They are pretty, but not worth paying $6,800 for a 3.5" Maksutov Ornament!

The guy in Sydney did say that if I am serious about astronomy don't get one, they are very limited in what they can see. For the same price or less I could get some quality equipment. I did! I got my 12" GS Deluxe Dobbie for a grand!

Yeah. Back when the questars were being manufactured, owning a 12" reflector was nearly un-heard of! Cheap like a grand I mean. It'll end up on some rich guys mantle piece, I bet. & never let anyone look through it once he realizes the optics are crap lol.

The first one is $10,859 Canadian dollars, still about US$9000. A bit of a difference to US$6800.

it does look nice though.. it looks really nice. i like it.. but i wouldn't buy it for that money..

on a side note.. do alot of people mod airbrush their ota? Something i've kinda thought about.. and not necissarily to paint something astronomy related.. but something like else.. more related to me.. to make it more.. 'individual'.

El,

I have never seen a custom painted OTA. Not even in magazines! Gee we must be a boring lot!!

I have custom painted almost every motorcycle I have ever had (approx 60) and 2 of my 3 hot rods years ago. And even I haven't custom painted my own OTA.

Dunno why, just haven't. Weird huh!!

Might be a business idea there

considering viewing is generally in the dark.... why do the painting?:confuse3:

BD.. i will be contacting u shortly in regards to my royalties ;) :P :D

i guess the only bad thing about having a custom paint job is that noone will be able to admire it in the dark.. but it'd be a hit at dusk at star parties and stuff.

You could always use luminous paint.:D There's a couple of guy's in this forum that doe's air-brushing. I think Mick Pinner is one? And me....Iv'e been threatening to do it for year's, just aint got around to it. Maybe one day....or maybe not.
