Hi Ron,
This is just 5 days before I leave on a two week boys only trip to the USA, it may be stretching the friendship with the wife to be there but if the weather looks really promising I'll see what I can do. As for the weather, hmmmm, as Paul said, I havn't observed this summer either, I have never seen so much cloud. obviously a lot of people got a lot of equipment for Christmas.
Might see you then. Cheers, Dennis.

Better get in Dennis cos there won't be any clear skies for years after the 19th of Feb. It's observatory delivery time :D

I am new to the group and fairly new at astronomy. Jeanette (jjjnettie) suggested I have a look at this night. What are the details re: start times, location and do i have to bring along anything?

:hi: Steve and :welcome:,there is a sticky at the top of this thread of how to get to Cambroon.:)
People usualy start arriving about 3:00 or so in the afternoon so as they can set up and then have time for a chat and a bit of refreshment and maybe find some planets in the daytime:P
Stuff to bring? Telescope if you have one, or Bino's,also any photo gear. If not there are plenty of scopes you can have a look through.
If you plan to stay the night, a mattress and a sleeping bag or a tent if you prefer to camp.
Some food for the BBQ or heat up in the microwave.
Warm clothes and footware, and a beanee as it can get quite cool at night whilste not moving around too much:cold:
Some insect repellant, you can be sure that after so much moisture in the last month or so there will be a few around:(
If you have any questions:shrug: PM me or Paul (1 ponders) and we will help you out.
I Look forward to meeting you:thumbsup::astron::stargaze:

Is that another shot at my extra noisy mount!!!
I remind you all the 'Silence the Meade Fund' is still open and is still accepting donations. We have now has been able to afford some blue-tack to silence the Meade a little. The result of this has been to lower the dB from 10000000000 to 1000000. Your support and donations are appreciated.

:P
(Though not very much I think it doesn't sound like a mozzie anymore or maybe I'm going deaf??? )
Hopefully will be there Ron, to give everybody's earwax a good rattling.

LOL, that just places a cloud over your little corner of the OBI.
I'm sitting here listening to the rain on my roof and smiling at how desperate we all sound..........
The glass is half full and it will be clear Saturday.

That's a shame Jeanette, I've heard that the predicted seeing over Ron's that night is going to be a record 11/10 and transparency down to 0.0000000000001% extinction. We'll let you know what it's like.;)

Is the ground nice and soggy Ron?
Judging by the rain we've had here you the soil should be nearing Weet-Bix consistency.

I may not be coming after all as I have to a lot of work on an English assignment. It's typical because the more it looks like I won't be able to come, the better the weather gets!
Frustrating for me but not anyone else :P
Will still let you know if I'm coming.

Hi Ron,
It looks like I will not be able to make it along tomorrow night due to work commitments:mad2: I am really disappointed as I was looking forward to getting up there being a newbie and all.
How often do you hold these events? maybe I can make it along to the next one.
I hope the weather holds up and the skies are as clear as last night, I forgot what the heavens look like.
Have a great evening

You can have my spot Chris. ;) I've been offered a free desk and other furniture for my observatory and tomorrow afternoon is the most convenient time for the current owner for me to pick it up. So I'll be at Mooloolaba come sundown.

Yes on both counts:D
Ron
OK. Looking good:D
I'll be leaving Brisbane around 1.45pm this arvo...meeting up with Gargoyle Steve at Landsborough around 3pm...and then on to Ron's!!!
Looking forward to catching up with you guys for the first time:thumbsup:
A very enjoyable evening.:)
Met plenty of IISers (face to face) for the first time and enjoyed the darkest skies I've been under for a while.
Thanks to Ron for your hospitality and for sharing that good-sized scope of yours with everyone:thumbsup:
Shame about the mossies, dew and fog/mist... But at least two of those are controllable, to some extent.
I hope I can make it up again...hopefully when Jupiter's riding high in the sky.
We might need a little separate/shielded area where the brightness of planetary imager laptops (such as mine) aren't going to impact on others?
Thanks again, Ron..and to Gargoyle Steve for the many invites to join the good folks at Cambroon.

Yes it was a great night, good turnout with plenty of people and scopes!
Was great to meet you finally Matt, good to see Josh becoming such a regular, and I'm pleased we got to wish you :birthday: too Randall and share that "old family recipe" birthday cake, even if it was all a couple of days early! (The cake tasted just as good - Mmmmmmm) We were all pretty amazed at your ASUS mini PC/Linux machine - especially Joshman! ;)
All in all it there was a great mix of old friends, and new ones too!
There was also a good selection of scopes on display too: 8, 10, 12 & 16 inch Dobs, Celestron & Meade SCT's (2 of them with accompanying DMK cams), a Skywatcher ED80, and so on.
Some of the views enjoyed by various people included the classics such as M42 in Orion, the Carina Nebula, both the LMC and SMC were glowing nicely to the naked eye but looked even better under closer telescopic inspection, we did the Omega Centauri / Tuc 47 comparison, checked out the Centaurus A and Sombrero galaxies, Mars and Saturn were both prominently on display and we were seeing who could find how many Saturnian moons in their scopes, and there was a selection of meteors during the entire evening. I saw a particularly nice, dazzling white, one fragment and flare out very nicely! Some folks hadn't seen the 5th and 6th stars in the Trapezium previously so we had a bit of a look at those in detail. We checked out some favourite clusters : Jewel Box, Gem Cluster, the "Wishing Well", the Beehive (M44), etc, etc.
:astron:
Good skies, good observing, good company! :stargaze:
The mozzies were present, but not ravenous, and seen off with a quick spray of Rid; the fog was a pain, but it was still coming and going up until 3:30 to 4am, with good patches of reasonable viewing quite late into the night. I saw a very quick glimpse of Jupiter just as it rose over the distant trees to the east, but it was swallowed almost immediately by a fog layer in that direction.
I think it was around 4am when Ron, Mike Chris and myself finally decided to pack it in and head for our respective beds / tents, etc. I think I settled into mine just after 4:30, but the damn rooster across the valley disturbed me just as I started to doze  so it was after 5 with daylight showing before I dropped off again.
Three cheers and a big Thanks to you Ron as usual for your hospitality
:party2:
and on a personal note thanks also for the delicious sausages and egg breakfast this morning!
Looking forward to next months new moon!
(and for those interested we'll be enjoying April's New Moon at the Barambah Dark Sky Camp.)
