Sorry you can't make it...you will be missed.

More importantly, does this mean all of your stuff (marquee, work area, gear tools etc.) won't be there either? If so then we will really really miss you!

OK lets just say that there is a table, a butchers knife, me and my request to seek leave from home to go - something will be missing:whistle:

I am limited now to the time i can take:scared: - qld astrofest is fully catered, has 240volt power, is over a week, is on the allowed list to attend, so to is ISSAC (since i will be helping out). So the looser for me will be SPSP - with no 240V power, dust, bush toilets, line up for a shower, no prizes after everyone else wins them (especially those with two tickets LOL) . On the down side I dont get to catch up with you guys. Last year I was as crook as anything - probably should not have been there but I hung on to embrace the ambience of the situation. Also because had to bring home a lot of extra gear;). No this year i will be at home, looking up at the cloud:doh: wondering what life will be like at SPSP............;):D

Registered last week, ready to go.

Went to six last year, must cut down this year maybe 5, especially as I'll be spending a month or so over in UK visiting my newest grandson. 3wks old today.

Maybe one in UK while I'm there, but probably be in the summer when its only dark for about 20mins.

lol Chris!
We'll sure miss you h0ughy! Especially since I borrowed some of your stuff last year, including one of your spare batteries to help power my mount - so I could take the widefield shot that's on the SPSP page!

The Mary Rose will be setting sail for SPSP again this year. I plan to arrive at Port Ilford on Thursday, like last year.

HOughy, it will be a shame not to see you, but I totally get what you are saying about the ease and comfort of Duckadang over Ilford. John, I am more than happy to take over HOghy's port/muscat duties.

Mike, you are welcome to have the northern suite of the Taj again this year.

Petra, you are becoming an astronomy tragic. Take care, or your other half may despair and trebuchet your new mirror into the yonder.

Hi Guys - I will be writing a new post soon with more details about the SPSP but in the meantime there are a few things I want to say.

We will have more showers this year.

The house site will be a designated Astro-Photographic area. Generators will be permitted there and also reasonable white light (from monitors etc). The house area will accomodate a good number of tents and it boasts a shower and flush toilet too so no need to go to the bottom area to attend to the needs of your bottom area.

There will be a separate AP area at the lower field but generators will not be allowed there.

The committee is mindful of the issues that arose from the last SPSP and we are working hard improve the event significantly.

We hope you can make it.

Hi Rod

Astronomy tragic! Now what is that? I would say that tragic astronomy, is more closer to the mark!

I have to admit that my other half is brilliant - I am extremely spoilt in that I can indulge in my interest to my hearts content. The only limitation that I face is..... work gets in the way.

There is no way that the other half will be anywhere near my new mirror. It is safely tucked away! He is too busy anyway building his treb to worry about what I'm up to!

Cheers Petra

Excellent news, Monte!

What's the horizons like at the house area? I've been there once but can't remember where the trees are and how much they impede compared to the main field.

montewilson
25-01-2008, 05:38 AM
The horizon is well below 20 deg all around. I have done all my observing there in the last 15 years.

Aloha Lance,

Saw you got to Bolivia back in Aug 2005 along with Gary Myers.
Have plans to try and get to Bolivia in the near future so would

Monte you're a cruel man, the time i cannot go and you now say generators are permitted!!! that was why i decided not to go this year - because of the lack of power - and the wife agreed (I still lack power LOL). Man this should have been spelt out before Christmas - then I could have at least bargained a bit:whistle:

really Gary, if you view from 12,500 feet, under dry & dark skies....:D
plus your at -16 degrees, so you 'll see the entire Milky Way.....:P

Aloha Lance,

Sounds magnificient! That's what I want to hear.
I've heard enough stories now about the skies in that part of the world
to know it can't be attributed to people just chewing on the local
cocoa leaves.

Though we do get to see the Milky Way at the zenith here at -33S,
there is no way we can compete with the 12,500' altitude and for
this reason they don't build any large professional optical telescopes
here in Australia anymore.

Speaking of world's great observing locations, I can't imagine it is
any coincidence that you are on the Big Island at the moment?

Do you ever run into an observer by the name of Doug Summers who
works at the Keck?

I understand you have been in communication with John Bambury so looking
foward to meeting you down here.

Best Regards

Gary

Aloha Lance,

I absolutely loved reading your 2005 observing report .

Also impressed that you covered over 101 of the 158 Globs (some of which are potential globs) that are out there. We may have to organise a glob marathon at Coona.:D I agree that Omega is The King and 47 Tucane is The Queen!

Cheers and see you soon.

Aloha Petra,:hi:

Thanx for taking a look at the B O L I V I A ~page, i was
so high when i wrote that! The sky, the setting and the
astronomers i had the honor to share those times with
were the best!

i'm looking at the 6th hour to the 16th hour for Coona.
In those 10 hours (+ or -), i'm thinking of "Galaxy Marathons/
Galaxy Cluster Marathons".... we got the aperture:eyepop:!

Looks like 47 tuc in the Evening & Omega after Midnight.....

Thinking, SMC & LMC tour for appetizers, Galaxies for
dinner and globulars for desert.:D

see ya, Lance:hi:
