Hi all,
my idea of making a statistical seeing map not lucky...:(

Could anyone from Adelaide chip in for a good location?
Like generally, the Adelaide hills, or down in the south like
Mount Compass? Perhaps Meadows?

When everything is equal, the local conditions are the major factors.
Any one?
Miklos.

Find a paddock dow towards Goolwa. Alternatively hed up towards the Barossa Valley.
Cheers
Duncan

Depends on whether you're primarily interested in dark skies or steady seeing. Of the two ASSA observing sites, Tooperang has darker skies overall but tends to be cloudy more often. Stockport has better northern horizons. The whole Barossa region isn't too dark these days. The mid north and Flinders are great and our local planetary photography guru says there can be very steady seeing down near Hindmarsh Island.

Only problem with the south coast would be salt mist.
The best aurora i ever saw was on Goolwa beach.
The surf even looked pink. That was in the mid to late 80's.
Top spot and great fishing.

Duncan:thumbsup:

cool story duncan, enjoyed hearing/reading aurora obs/stories specially from the '80's, must of been quite a show! :eyepop:

my first aurora's i saw was only some minor activity white beams/glows, was from the coorong while nightfishing and camping - we thought they were searchlights from boats way out, but i now realise what they were of course. one time was about 1980 and another was mid to late '80's

always wanted to see a good aurora from the south coast

one thing about down there, and other open coastal spots, even lower yorkes, they can get periods a lot of very very strong and constant wind, but goolwa would be the worst for that.

there's good/decent spots all over the place, but they all have their issues - 'local cloud' is a big one in the hills and down south

but elevation is king for 'seeing' still, but the north is the most cloud free as mentioned

Thanks every one, I'm in Flagstaff Hill.
Most of the time the Airy disk is a fuss bowl...
I guess because of the Urban heat and the hill generated eddies
in the upper atmosphere. Paul are you there? What you think?
I try to convince my wife to move south when we down sizing,
after the kids left. The question is where to? I'm after steady seeing more
than dark sky.
Miklos.

Clayton has the best seeing that I have found yet in SA. I go to Clayton every summer and each year it has always had good seeing. I have only seen one night where is was 10/10, but that was 3 years ago. During winter Wallaroo has great seeing also. Don't worry about the salt, the proximity to the coast will more than make up for a bit of salt mist. It can always be washed off.

You will find that Toops often has good seeing but as Graeme said it has lots of cloud too.

In terms of the wind for the south coast, I have found that it blows quite hard all day at Clayton but drops after sunset. This is solar generated wind, so once the sun goes down it becomes quite still.

The Barossa is nice for seeing, but tends to be a bit spasmodic.

For Dark skies go anywhere that is 150km from Adelaide and you get nice dark skies.

what about when there is southerlies and s/westerlies rumples? stronger than most northerlies in my experience

been fantasising bout moving to Burra for years now, cool town. lady at the pub on a visit said they had the same elevation as mount lofty, but i think its more like 600mtrs - well back to real estate webites for more cheap (non-coastal) country property drooling  wish they had equity gains like the city does, lol

Yes you get the southerlies, but these most often die away at Clayton. Although if the weather is just foul anyway then it will not. In other words it is not paradise, but often when I go down there it is pretty good and the seeing can be fantastic.

The elevation can be good, but seeing is often best near the coast, usually within 1km is the best. Of course if you can get to 4000mtres above and have the sea all the way around you, you will get the best seeing possible. Anywhere in the hills is problematic due to the undulations in the terrain. Often good seeing can be destroyed by terrain.

Yeah right, Clayton.
I'm not in the position to get a residence and commute to work from "hoop-hoop" land (wife's edit).
Ok , I do, but my wife say "you dead meat"....
Any more resonable location? How about Mclaren Vale? Flat, no hills.
Ok no water to smooth eddies, but better than Flagstaff Hill?
Miklos.
