Advanced Astronomy

In line with the thread on radio astronomy, has anyone else ever tried any other form of astronomy that isn't related to viewing? By that I mean actually doing some form of crude scientific analysis, maybe by photometry, spectroscopy or astrometry?

From what I can remember from the school days basic stuff like analizing the spectrum from different stars and planets .Shifts in the spectrum weather they were traveling closer or away from us.
Only basic High school stuff.
Long time ago never givin it much thought to it over the years.

I would like to at some stage ......ccd and maxim dl software would start me off ...ah santa listening mate

CCD with Maxim - can you explain that? I thought because of the architecture of a CCD and the way that it worked that it was impossible to analyse spectrums? I guess photometry would be possible using a known exposure time/appeture/focal length/ISO setting, but I'd imagine that it would still be really imprecise...

Have a look at this site , the author reguarly posts on the AO forums and i find the work he does pretty interesting -astrometric observations of NEOs/minor planets . MaxiumDl would help with automation/PEC taining.
