october the 12th here was the last time (prettymuch) I recall any sustained fair weather for observing ..goes around .. comes around mate :)

actually last year was pretty freaky for clear nights up here ..and I remember getting a little ticked off that it was clear every night and I'd have to go out instead of doing semi important stuff ..like cooking a meal for the family and such :D

Gorgeous evening in Melbourne. I'm off comet Tuttle hunting from my back yard, after that Moon sets! Roll on summer! (But no fires or I really mean to say - NO SMOKE, please).

leon
14-01-2008, 10:49 PM
Yep Ken you are right, yet another tonight and as you said another week of it, however the Moon will give us a break.

Damn you guys!

Hi Leon, don't worry about the Moon. A Ha filter will solve that problem.

Cheers

Maybe for you on the coast, but last year was one of the worst I've had for
good observing nights. But then again last year was a busy year dealing with
others matters.

Yep this weather will be the death of me. I havent had 1 good nights sleep in 2 weeks and am suffering chronic sleep deprivation. I live my days virtually stoned, droopy eyed and at risk of dropping dead at any moment. Even my purchase of an OIII filter yesterday had no effect. Even my eyepieces are suffering, being covered in dust all over from relentless use.

It's a cruel, cruel world...

the weather gods will smite you one day.

ballaratdragons
15-01-2008, 01:35 PM
Don't worry, it will come to a time when we get cloud for weeks on end and the rest of you will have clear skies

Don't forget that we suffer ice and snow in winter time. Now is our chance to make up for frozen scopes

I know wot you mean ken, I havent seen such a looooong run of awesome astro weather in years here! to top it off no smoke - so far - and the daytime skies are that nice deep blue nearly EVERYDAY! not that washed out milky white blue we were getting a lot of there, cept for the really hot days, incredible stuff, like the old days to me, all that humid stuff is going to its rightful locations for a change ;) imagine if qld returned to its '80s weather!? :scared: seems to be tho

你B
15-01-2008, 02:56 PM
Yup that's for sure. That time is called June 1 - August 31. Nothing but unrelenting solid grey stratus.

fringe_dweller
15-01-2008, 03:04 PM
I saw a 5% humidity reading on the evening news/weather not long ago :eyepop:
low humidity like that is equal to at least a few hundred metres extra elevation I have read before :)

ballaratdragons
15-01-2008, 03:07 PM
as long as the Humidity isn't replaced with dust or heat shimmer!

fringe_dweller
15-01-2008, 03:18 PM
true true, so far, so good tho :face:

CoombellKid
15-01-2008, 04:46 PM
Ummm! it's not like we dont get frosty bits in winter too, at least up here
on the north coast, and camp duckadang during QLD's astrofest. And we
often get snow to the SW and W like Armidale, Glen Innis and Tenterfield.
The old wicked winds from the west, will freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

I didn't managed to catch the great comet of 07 until it was well into it's
display, due to similar weather we're having now

你B, I know how that feels, just been a long time in between :mad2:

I have just been out looking at that clear sky again, and think i might just let it go and get a good sleep instead, but that thought could change very quickly when the Sun goes down and the Stars appear, its like an addiction.

suppose it's a good oppurtunity to catch a bit more than 3 hours sleep out of every 24 for the first time in weeks...

Sydney still looks worse though - look at all that $H#&^Y cold and rain breathing down their necks http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN10064.shtml :help:

At the other extreme, Mildura and Broken Hill have been averaging 13.3 hours of sunshine per day this month :stargaze:

EDIT: I just found out the reason why Melbourne's forecast has gotten so crap - Bintel just called me with news that the H-Beta and UHC filters I ordered have arrived. Whooooops my bad!!!

I have checked many weather sites and they all say the same. No rain for us here, and the earlier predicted thunderstorms for Fri & Sat are now gone!!!!

Give us some rain . . . pleeeeeez!

Sounds wierd for a stargazer wanting rain  , but here is our updated forecast

Alchemy

I dont mind if it clouds up for a bit, just as long as about 4 days after the full moon it clears up again.

leon
16-01-2008, 08:30 PM
Yea, guys although I have been bragging about the clear days and nights i have to admit that i would swap any of them for rain. :)

It is so dry here, just having a smoke could set the place on fire.

So no more bagging you guys from me ;)

But after the downpoor it has been a steady and welcome light rain.

Here are my gutters during the downpoor!!!!!!!!

Yeah i know the feeling. It's drizzling up here again. Managed 30mins last night before the cloud rolled in. Took a couple of happy snaps with my point and shoot through the eyepiece.(see Cheap Shots) in solar system. I was going to have another crack tonight but not to be.:mad2:
Oh well just sit and drool over the images on IIS.

Simple, mate.... Live at the TOP of the hill, not Tabulam:thumbsup:

xelasnave
22-01-2008, 10:43 AM
The top hill is in permanent cloud and rain ..it has its own little weather thing going on..even if it is fine here it is raining up there ..it does not stop.. it is just heavy or light.. the clouds come at me thru the trees.. and everything is as damp as..I cant even get the gear out to play with.. and as much as I love my dogs they stink..they sleep on my bed when I am not there and it is now so wet I have to sleep on a cot without a mattress...

I feel better having a grizzle mind you:P...
AND I can not get to Sydney ..running two months late at that end of my life...
I dont mind being here as my daughter is here.. it is a bit strained as you can imagine but when something ticks me off I come and annoy my friends here or write about gravity (well about everything but gravity in truth) at poor Shawns site... but she has only so much time for me with her games so I get bored and you poor guys get the tail end of that...

have a great day:thumbsup:

Mate!!! I used to live in Glen Innes and the nights were so clear AND cold....that one felt as though one could touch the stars. But then, I lived there through 2 drought situations in the 80s and 90s.;)
