strange thingy in the sky

yesterday arvo I was sitting down watching tv when I looked out side and notice this arc in the sky I assumed it was a rainbow, which it probably is but in the evening twilight it just came through as a pink arc,
It wasn't raining so I think it might have been the ice crystals in the high level cloud because the arc got brighter in the thinker part of the cloud.

It lasted as long as the sun set but got fainter by the minute so I was very lucky to look outside when I did, other wise It would have just disappeared.

2 shots at ISO 800, exposure was 100th of a second and f 4.5.

I'll have too process one a little more to make it stand out a bit better.

thank, If only I could get rid of the noise I'd give this one a print just because it's unusual, I'll give it a go though.

Yep that is different love the colours in that shot, do you think it could be vapor trail of sorts, i have had some thing very similar once.

doing a few google searches haven't revealed to much yet,

I know it's not a halo because the picture is taken towards the north east, that rules that out. Only thing left is a rainbow, but it wasn't raining, so it has to be the actual cloud it's self was creating it and because of the twilight it gave it the pink tone. I would like to know what it's called though, so when I show people the picture I can appear smarter.

The only other thing it could be is a reflection of the bright cloud in the Picture, because if it was caused by the sun itself wouldn't the whole cloud be bright? which is making me think that it might be a reflection off the bright cloud

It is definatly an rainbow.
Look at post 2, right hand side purple and left hand side red.

Yep Mill, on closer inspection it dose possibly have some rainbow colour in it.

As soon as I opened your 1st image I saw the whole colour spectrum in it.

You don't need rain to get rainbows. Just light mist or very thin fog will make them. And yes, very thin cloud too (which is mist or fog anyway :P )

yeah, I would believe it to be a rainbow too, just one type I haven't seen before
