Would really like to go to BSG this year.

I missed last year's due to the move to Brisbane.:)

Is it going to be on at the same time as Astrofest this year?

That'd make for a tough decision but I'd probably have to go with my 'home' event.

Matt

I think that Astrofest is at the beginning of August this year. I would love to do an Astrofest one year, if I could squeeze it in I would do both.

Hopefully we will see you at 2009.

Hi all

Come on guys - there will be penthouses for both of you...

We have been overwhelmed by the support of residents here in the border region and by the various sites that have approached us to host Border Stargaze 2008.

We should be finalising the package within days and announcing the details very shortly. We are getting extremely excited about what we will be able to offer :D.

Stay tuned....

Hi all
We have been absolutely blown away by the amount of interest we have received from various potential sites in our region that are keen to host Border Stargaze 2008.

But at the end of the day we have chosen a site that we feel provides all the important elements of a good Star Party get together.

The Astronomical Society of Albury Wodonga is proud to announce that Border Stargaze 2008 will return to Wymah Valley Retreat formerly known as The Great Aussie Resort. The exciting news is that the retreat has undergone a major transformation. Accommodation has been added and upgraded, including the addition of a bunkhouse and teachers accommodation.
Camping sites - now have an ensuite!

We are very committed to keeping the accommodation and food pricing as low as possible, and at the same time offering a added bonus to all that register as with last years event.

Details and photos of the new accommodation types and rates will be announced as soon registration goes live in late February

More information shortly.

Cheers Petra

That is terrific news Petra! It is a great location, and the upgraded facilities will be a bonus. Also nice to hear that you are getting a lot of local support for the event - it has to be good for the region.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this year's Border Stargaze, woo-hoo! Don't miss it if you can possibly get there!! :)

Cheers -

Great news for a great community event, and for someone who usually camps last years BSG was pure luxury.

I've spoken to one two people who wanted to come with their families but were reluctant, they assumed the accommodation was like the cabins/facilities at Lostock or Snake valley - I put them right.

Where do I sign.

It will be good to see you both again.

The site looks great! They have done a lot of work to upgrade all accommodation types, without any major impacts to the observing fields.

I just cant get over the fact that the camper van sites now have ensuites - I have never seen that before.

Hey Petra,

What is the unit type that's right next to the observing feild? (Mum and I were in them last year) we think they are the leasure units.

Also are you organising a community organisation to do the food again?

Hope to see you there Neweyn & Monica

Hi Neweyn & Monica

Yes the Leisure Units are the ones that you are after. Great to hear that you are coming back and look forward to catching up. And, yes, we will be engaging local community organisations to cater again.

Please also note that we have just confirmed that Powered Sites "tent camping" will be available again this year.

Hi Petra,

Looking forward to seeing you and David there.

Having attended the inaugural Border Stargaze in 2007, we can wholeheartedly
recommend Border Stargaze. This particular venue is well suited to both the individual
observer and families alike, as the accommodation and general amenities
make it suitable for both.

Hi Gary

It will be great to catch up with you and Mai again and thankyou for your support.

We have been run off our feet with early enquires and as said in earlier posts we have not advertised widely yet.

Due to the popularity of the Cosmodome - we are planning to bring it up a day earlier (Wednesday) and base it in Albury for the day to ensure we do not disadvantage those that are unable to make the trip out to the resort.

Its like a mini Border Stargaze, so to speak! Oh yes, and we get to babysit the giant NASA carrot man for the night.

Hi Petra.

Just a question about the power on the observing fields.
I am just reading this "
If you plan to use a laptop computer at the telescope, make sure the batteries are fully
charged each day. There will be no access to mains power available at your telescope on
the observing fields." .
If that is true then it will be of no use for imagers to be there unless they have spare batteries and an converter to provide 240 volt for all the accessories.

ausastronomer
13-04-2008, 12:44 PM
That would suit me fine.

The first IISAC at Lostock I had my night vision beautifully destroyed 3 nights running, all night long, by a thoughtless imager whose computer screen resembled the entry to Luna Park. The sad thing was the longer I stayed up, the longer he stayed up.

The Border Stargaze is heavily promoted as a public outreach event both to local schools and the community. Clearly that outreach focus will be on visual astronomy, not imaging.

Modern astrophotography has progressed to a level where it is no longer an ASTRONOMY discipline but is a COMPUTER SCIENCE DISCIPLINE. Astrophotographers use computer technology to locate the target, capture all the raw image data and then to process the image data. The fact that award winning images are being taken by astrophotographers who have essentially been involved in ASTRONOMY for 5 minutes, in the whole scheme of things, clearly demonstrates a predominance of computer knowledge as a prerequisite to taking good images, not necessarily any knowledge of astronomy.

Maybe award winning astro images should be published in PC WORLD, as opposed to SKY AND TELESCOPE. With GPS technology you don't even have to know how to identify 2 alignment stars :)

Serious imagers taking long exposure images with high grade equipment, who actually make a CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE as opposed to taking a mass of PRETTY PICTURES FOR INTERNET PUBLICATION, are exempted from the above rant, as are the thoughtfull imagers who respect the night vision preservation needs of the visual observers :)

Cheers,
John B

Now that is an f****g nice remark John.
Looks like you dont care much about imaging and just dismiss imaging as astronomical.
You just stay with your visual observations and shouldn't make remarks like this, just because you dont like imaging.
You would be better off sending NASA an email and tell them to stop imaging because that is against your wish and brings the astronomy in disrespute.
Just stop making stupid remarks like this and stay in your own corner.
Next time just try to be constuctive or shut your mouth for ever.

ausastronomer
13-04-2008, 02:24 PM
NASA don't turn up at Public Outreach events, set up in the middle of the main observing field and ruin everyones' night vision.

There is a time and place for everything. The middle of the main observing field at a public star party isn't the place to set up imaging equipment, particularly when the event is being promoted as a public outreach event.

If the organisers can set aside a SEPARATE area for imagers, shielded from the main observing field, I have no problems with that at all. Fortunately most imagers are thoughtfull (at least 95%) and properly shield their screens and turn the brightness right down. Unfortunately, there are a few that don't give a rats about anyone else on the field and light the joint up like the Electric Horseman riding in to Luna Park.

I only have a problem with imagers that don't respect the rights of visual observers, at a public star party. There is room for everyone, just respect the rights of others. Unfortunately one person didnt do this at IISAC 2006 which you might say left a very sour taste in my mouth in regard to imagers. I don't like making the effort to go to such events only to be blinded all night long by a laptop screen and have my 3 nights under beautifull dark skies ruined.

Cheers,
John B

JohnG
13-04-2008, 02:35 PM
If it is the same as last year, there is an area set aside for imagers, the rules on laptops etc are not quite as strict as for the main observing field.

Cheers

mill
13-04-2008, 02:45 PM
First of all, there is an separate area for imagers with an less strickt light policy.
But there is no power on that field, unless you have a big batterie and converter, and can power everything from that. (what i dont have).
Secondly, we are allowed on the main field as long as we cover the laptop and have an shroud over it (i have all that and it will all be in a tent).
But still no power.
This was an question for the organizers of this event and not for you to rant about imagers.
PS: ever thought about going to that person and ask him to do something about his screen instead of just complaining?
Imagers love an dark unpolluted sky too you know.
And about the public outreach, a lot of people also like to see what comes up on the screen after having looked trough an scope, so they can see what it looks like in colour and then know what they have been looking at.
So for me it is like this: No power and it is of no use to me and dont see any reason to go. (imagers getting pushed in a corner).
Any other event i went too had power on the field for both visual observers and imagers.

mill
13-04-2008, 02:48 PM
Hi JohnG.

Do you remember if there was any power on that seperate field?
Cheers Martin.

JohnG
13-04-2008, 02:54 PM
Hi Martin

There was last year, but, I don't think there is for this year, there was a problem with electrical overload and part of the complex was blacked out.

I would bring portable power if I was you to be on the safe side.

See ya there.

Cheers

ausastronomer
13-04-2008, 02:55 PM
If that is the case then that suits me fine. As I said before, there is room for everyone, it just has to be done thoughtfully and respecting the needs of both visual observers and imagers.

I don't intend carting a trailerload full of gear on a 7 hour drive, chewing up several hundred $$$$ in accomodation and meals, plus a couple of hundred $$$$ worth of fuel, only to be blinded all weekend long by some thoughtless clown running 6kw of illumination to his laptop screen, setup right beside me.

Cheers,

John, you could always have politely said something to the person, or asked one of the organisers or volunteers to say something.

Complaining about it 2.5 years later and bunching all astrophotographers in the one basket in an ill-considered rant just isn't cricket.

Petra's thread isn't the place for it either.

If someone has the brightness up too high - just shine the laser pointer on them till they get the message- either they will get the message you are annoyed about the brightness or that you want to shoot them - either way its a Win.:D:P

I said something to you on the 2nd morning Mike and you obviously said something to the person concerned because they moved all of their gear to the other side of the house for the 2nd nights observing.

Only to blind me from the opposite direction on the 2nd night :)

IISAC 2007 was fine because the visual observers were sent to the bottom field, away from the imagers, laptops, lights and all the amenities, so the imagers could be close by the power available at the house.

As you and many others on the forum who have observed with me well know Mike, I try to be as helpfull and courteous to everyone on the observing field as I possibly can. I have always tried to be like that. I just take exception to a few of the thoughtless imagers that have scant regard for the other people on the SHARED observing field. As I said previously 95% of imagers don't fall in to that category and it is only a small minority who cause problems.

Cheers,
John B

Hi all

The aim of the event is twofold. We are combining our public outreach activities with the normal format of a Star Party.

ASAW embraces both aspects enthusiastically and welcomes astrophotographers. The Retreat has numerous outlets for power and areas where astrophotographers can setup - however like many other Star Parties we have limitations to areas where power is accessible. The main observing field has no 240V power available.

The main areas that we will recommend for those that require 240V are the tennis court (yes the lights will be off) and vacant "powered sites".

The area that Phil Hart will be conducting his practical astrophotography work shop is on the Tennis Court. This will ensure that we strike a balance for all our guests.

If there are any concerns or questions regarding the event - please do not hesitate to contact either myself or the Project Manager (David Chandler).

To also qualify the location of the Retreat it is 30 km North of Albury and 30kms South of Holbrook.

Cheers Petra

Having read the concerns of some, i find it a bit sad that we, imagers and visual observers cant enjoy the event in harmony and share any of the fields together.

Why should some be isolated to a place where one cant even socialise, have a yarn, and enjoy the evenings together.

There is room for everyone if we all respect the other. :)

Looks like a very long extension lead is in order ;)

The Border Stargaze is a wonderful event, and I don't think we should be side-tracked by what-ifs. Visual observers and imagers will both have a great time, and I know each will respect the others on the observing field. The ASAW have rules laid down to cover all this in any case. And we shouldn't forget the general public - there was enormous interest last year, and this year should be even better!

I'll be going (just visual) and am really looking forward to it. Petra and the rest of the organising committee do a fantastic job, and anyone that can possibly get there should do it!

Hi there

Thank you Rob for the kind words of support.

This will be our second year of running the event. And we are learning with each experience and challenge that we encounter.

Can I please stress that our volunteers, including myself will do our best to ensure that we cater for all interested parties and ensure an enjoyable BSG experience. We are not excluding astrophotography from the main field - it will be a BYO power supply (Battery pack). Leon, I am more than happy to loan you my battery pack for the week.

The main reason we are locating astrophotography on the tennis court is it has power and makes it easy for Phil Hart to engage those intersted in Astrophotography.

It is a difficult balancing act, in catering for all interests however we will have several identifiable hands on the observing field and around the grounds for you to approach should you have any concerns.

On a different note...

The site is back up! Which is really good news, the traffic has been incredible!:scared:

I am always available should you need to drop me a line or give me a call.

We are aiming to cater for all interests. Bear in mind that the property is huge, only drawback is - we just dont have the power on the field. Imaging is fine anywhere on the field provided you have portable power and are considerate for those around you.

Imaging workshop will be located in a specific area for those that need to have access to power. I have a spare power supply if needed over the weekend.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Cheers Petra d.

I'll resist the temptation to use my laptop in case I incur the wrath of the earlier poster. Worst would be the screen on my camera. Maybe with that I can get a few 'pretty pictures':P

I'd like to add my thanks to the organising committee and all the hard working volunteers for putting on another 'stellar' Border Stargaze! I had a fantastic time, as did my wife and cousin who came along too!

It's a wonderful event, with great location, events, facilities and entertainment, and it was good to catch up with a lot of people I knew and to meet so many new ones. And the public outreach program you ran is a credit to you, an amazing success!

I've attached a couple of shots of the observing field that I took when I arrived on the Friday - this only shows a very small part of the observing field (it's huge!). Glad I took these ones, as despite the best of intentions I completely forgot to take more later!

the old owl made it home safe and sound
feathers didn't get too wet in the rain, and the trip took about 6 an 3/4 hours, with two petrol stops.

my thanks go to David and Petra (free breakfast, Geoff, Emma - whatever you think your name is) and that well drilled ASAW crew who made the weekend so enjoyable.

pity it rained on sat nite, but as someone said - the word 'Party' in Star Party should not be ignored

there are sure to be many stories come from the weekends activities and endeavours to keep you readers amused (well i hope so anyway)

the fireplace in the community hall was witness to tales of woe from the tennis courts - leads being tripped over and power being disconnected, gear not working as it should in the nite when it tested ok in the daylight, horrible noises coming from the throat of mounts, outside lights from bungalow's being left on
but then there were the good stories about advise and time taken by the imaging lot out there to the newcomers and interested public visitors on friday nite - that fireplace, i'm sure, has many more stories that others might tell

the Bintell boys decided to have an eyepiece throwing competition when their sales slackened off at one stage - so out came a new ETHOS and (they thought that would be heavy enough) they lined up on the boardwalk to see who could throw it the furthest - the boys from YORK were very keen to have the opportunity to throw one of Bintells premium eyepieces around - i didn't hear who ended up being the winner, but after a quick run under the tap and a wipe off, it was put away for next years event.

there are tales of the DOME, kids being tortured in there, made to laugh and scream in excitement at what they were forced to see.
there are law suits pending because Miles ran out of breath and the dome colapsed on people. Pink Floyd has been banned from any more events at the park for being TOO loud
OH! - thanks for a hilarious trivia nite Miles (and sidekick David)

if there is one highlight from the weekend that sticks out, it is sitting with John (xstream) and Anna and listening to the enthusiasm and joy in the voices of some of the kids and parents as they looked through Anna's scope on frid nite

 ASAW
i will be back next year for sure

Thanks Petra, David and all your hard working volunteers. A great weekend. The weather was great for a couple of nights and the Sat night trivia session was not to be missed. Great to catch up with lots of old friend and a few new ones. The speakers were again fantastic. Phil Hart definitely got me thinking of a few things to do with my camera for the future.

As for the eyepiece chuck the winner was Dave (Mr Petra) :)Champion Tosser :)for the weekend. The Bintel bargan box now has a well field tested EP in it at a reasonable price. I think it should be mounted and become an annual event.

All in all a credit to you all. Well done. Book me in for next year please.

This was my 2nd year and I will most certainly be back in 2009.

A big positive for me about this event is the fact that there are activities to keep the kids and the adults occupied around the clock and the accomodation is close to the observing field and very comfortable. Another important thing to me as the representative of the Three Rivers Foundation ( www.3rf.org ) at Border Stargaze 2008, is that this event promotes Astronomy and Science Education to the general public and school children exceptionally well. This is evidenced by the numbers of schoolchildren and "non" astronomers that attended over the 4 days.

A really excellent event that is very well organised and held at an outstanding venue. A great effort from all the team at ASAW and Wymah Valley Retreat.

Thanks also to our guest speakers who made the Saturday afternoon so

Wonderful to hear that possibly over a thousand people passed through.
Congratulations! I assisted John Bambury on the Friday night on one of the 3RF 18"

Yes the skies were dark all right

Phil Hart showed how it is possible to take really good images without tracking..this inspired my wife who has never taken an astroimage ever before to give it a try -not with a DSLR-as she didnt have one-but with her slightly long in the tooth point and shoot Canon A85-15 secs max exposure-and this is what she finished with after stacking in DSS and some processing in GIMP (I did not have PS on my laptop)

oh the bright object is of course Jupiter

she simply put her camera facing upwords on my observing table and took a large number of 15 sec images which she stacked in DSS later

Border Stargaze 2008 in review (pics to follow!)

Border Stargaze registrations were 181 by the time we settled in at the retreat on Wednesday 27th August and reached over 1000 participants by the end of the star party.

What a great start to a fantastic star party!
We had a very special outreach program set up for the schools in our region with invitations to attend going out in early June. The response was nothing short of exciting. Thanks to our crew of volunteers and Tanya from Journeyman the children that attended were treated to the Cosmodome and a range of fun science activities. In all we hosted 12 schools and 396 students from age 7 to 17.
The outreach program began early on Wednesday morning courtesy of the Albury City Council and the management and staff of the North Albury Stadium. Students from Wewak Street School Albury and James Fallon were the first of many students whose excitement could be heard throughout the sessions. The operation then moved out to the retreat in readiness for the Thursday - Friday program.
Rob McNaught joined our team of volunteers running demonstrations of measuring the distance to the Sun and enthralled students with lively discussions about discovering near Earth objects. Many thanks to Rob for his support. Every student that attended enjoyed the interactive program with sundial making and Saturn building generating the most noise and excitement. Each student left with an Australian Geographic bag filled with activities and a special activities book courtesy of significant support by the Australian Government Department of Innovation, Science and Industry.
Teachers, Carers and volunteers pitched in for a memorable experience. With two days of magnificient blue skies Solar observing was a hit for students and our crew of volunteers, followed up by Cosmodome sessions with Tanya and Miles to round off the program.
To cap off the community oureach program we hosted the general public between 6 - 10:30pm on Friday 29th. The Cosmodome sessions were booked solid and were a joy for families, children and the child in all of us and the young at heart. Attendances this year were up on last with our counters stopping at 427. Many improvements were made to the organisation of our program with our volunteer crews on the gate, traffic and meet & greet working like clockwork assisting the public to get safely to the observing field. A very special thanks to John Bambury and his 18 inch Obsession from 3RF and the generosity and support of our guests who volunteerd to join our team of telescope tour guides. The laser guided tours were again a success with many people rejoining tours.
The best part for our team of volunteers was to be treated to expressions of appreciation from the public as they left for the evening. In a number of instances the public rolled down the windows of their cars and thanked our team as they drove past. We are lucky to have such a fantastic community spirit and thank the public for helping to make Border Stargaze a success.
Many of our guests were still talking about how much they enjoyed being a part of something special. With all the good vibes our guests were further treated to two clear night skies and an extensive quality program. Phil Hart started the ball rolling by running successful workshops on astrophotography that impressed beginners and pros alike. Rob McNaught again delivered a quality presentation, many thanks for returning. In spite of a sore throat Fred Watson completed the cast and delivered a sterling and entertaining presentation of 'Stargazer - the past, present and future of the telescope?' with one guest commenting that 'not one word was wasted'. Our special thanks to our guest speakers and to our registered guests for supporting them and us.

Sponsors
We extend our gratitude and personal thanks once again to the on-going support of our sponsors for their significant contributions in making this event spectacular. This support not only included donations of prizes and funds it also extended beyond that as they volunteered their time in contributing to the successful outreach program. We are indebted to them for the strong support they provide us with throughout the year and at the event itself.

Wymah Valley Retreat
On behalf of ASAW we would like to thank Aspen Parks the management team and staff at the The Wymah Valley Retreat (http://www.aspenparks.com.au/content/park.php?idCamp=27) who delivered a service well above expectations and are to be commended on their patience, professionalism, and community focused spirit. A special thanks to Mullengandra P&C who fed an army of hungry people.

Thanks Petra but WinZip won't extract it for me. Brings up a diagnostic box that says there is "Unknown method in BSG GRP Photo 2008.JPG"....

Going another way around, I bring up another WinZip box saying "skipping BSG GRP Photo 2008.JPG: this file was compressed using an unknown compression method."

Help!!!

EDIT!!! - Cancel that Petra! Downloaded latest version of WinZip and it extracted it OK. Thanks, and thanks again for ASAW's hospitality during the event!

Cheers -
