Can anyone recommend a freight company that will transport a large 'scope interstate and insure it? Even better, that do this cheaply?

Given the number of scopes bought and sold on IIS every year, I'm imagining that there must be hundreds of people must have made these sort of arrangements...

If you've had dealings with freight companies you can either recommend (or even ones to avoid), please could you post your comments.

This must be an issue that affects all of us at one time or another...

Cheers,

BigJ

I used a furniture transport mob, as they have better setup for more delicate things. They took a 20" telescope to W.A and a 22" from W.A to Vic.
Nothing broke or damaged, so look under Furniture removalists Interstate and give them a call.
Cost me about $500.00 all up..each way of course...

Hi BigJ,

I can tell you what may be the cheapest one but since I've never used them I can't recommend them.
I was trying to figure out for my scope buyer how much would be to send it(packed in 28 kg 800x400x500mm box) from metro Victoria to regional NSW. The first three freight companies that I checked gave me almost the same quote and it was close to $200 without insurance. Then I found these guys (http://www.smartsend.com.au/) and their online calculator told be that the freight cost is only $42 and no insurance also.

cheers,

Michael

I used Airroad for transporting my G-11 from Brisbane to Sydney. It cost about $80. Insurance is provided in this for new goods only upto $1000. But i am not sure if they provide extra insurance for user equipment. The goods have to be packed safely for transport. They do not pack. I created a online account on there site and was able to get a quote online, as the seller gave me accurate measurements. I think it was about 40kg all up.
For some pickup/delivery areas you may have to call for a quote.

Several other well known courier company's quoted min $200 and upwards.

A removilist company with a good reputation maybe better if the goods are Fragile. Obviously a Losmandy mount can take a bit of knocking around but a SCT OTA will not.
