Had not seen the Crab for a while. Being so near to Mars I thought somebody should have a go:).

Details
250mm f4.5 ST7e MaximDL
15x10minL -Friday night
3x10min 2x2 binned each RGB -last night
Dk subtract all, H/C pixels, median, colour adjust
Comb. to L
Comb. to RGB
Comb. to LLRGB

Indeed, nice to see the Crab again and this is a good presentation of it. Well done Jeff. 1.65 arcsec/pixel had provided a nice resolution. It looks like the luminance data could be stretched further to show the faint outer shell wisps.

I tried this morning to stretch the Luminance data. When levels were reached that did show more outer data, the central region overexposed. Any advise on compressing the levels would be greatly appreciated -as I could use this with galaxy images.

Use levels to initially set the white point. Set the white point so that the brightest regions are 20-30 points below the clipping threshold. These values with vary. Then use curves to bring out the dim regions. If your curves process results in white clipping, then undo all changes and reset your initial levels lower. You can do some tricky curves in PS, such as a typical S to dull the white point or sharp R to (similar to DDP) or a soft Spline. Just experiment to see what works.
