:eyepop: blimy thats a pinging image you have there , amazing detail and perfecly framed , i have a 350d modded dslr ( baader filter)on loan but was wondering if i should use an ir/uv filter on it as my first test image was really red.

That is a stunning image, Humayun!
First time I've ever heard of an image of this area being called the 'Alnitak' region.
Everyone else calls it the Horsehead and Flame region.
But the name 'Alnitak Region' made me come in even quicker to have a look
Very nice work. :)

Why would you not be happy with that, H?
Beautiful shot. Excellent work controlling the brightness of Altinak. Did you mask that out with shorter exposures?
40x 5 minutes is a lot of data, and it shows in the beautiful smoothness and detail.
What a ripper.

I was thinking exactly the same as Mike, that is a humdinger H. The composition is exquisite. I'd be entering that in the next astrophotography competition. I'd vote for it.
Beautifully composed - and smooth as silk from all those subs! Well done - The Alnitak region would be an expensive neighbourhood wouldn't - think of the views! :D

Very Nice Mate, I still remember last time I used averted imagination to see something of the Horsehead nebula in the 18 "
I agree, you should put that in one of the comps !

Col,
The camera I use has the Baader IR/UV filter in place. I've not used a modified camera without one of those. Try it and see?
Cheers!
Ric,
Thanks, mate!
Ken,
LOL at you coming in to look quicker because of the way I'd named the image!
Thanks for the kind words.
Ron,
Cheers!
Thierry,
Thank you!
Mike,
I feel I could have done more. I'll try it again next year, perhaps, with a different instrument and see what I can bring out.
I didn't use short exposures; just pre-processed in a way to control the brightness of the brightest stars. You can see Alnitak's companion. :)
You're right, four hours is a lot of data. This is the longest and deepest I've gone. I want to do more.
Cheers!
Rod,
I think there's still a long way for me to go before I start entering competitions. There's no shortage of very skilled photographers and image processors (wizards) out there.
Thanks. :)
Lee,
I like the way you describe it, "smooth as silk". It took a very long time to pre-process those 40 sub-exposures!
It'd be the ultimate place to live.
Thanks!
David,
Thank you, kind sir. :)
Gary,
I'd love to be able to shoot Hα and add it to my RGB data to see how much more detail can be brought out. Something to think about.
Thanks!
Jeanette,
Glad you like it. :)
Bill,
Cheers, sir.
Alchemy,
Thanks! But, I still think more could have been done. Next time!
Scott,
It's the longest I've gone. I want to go deeper, yet.
Cheers.
Ian,
I don't remember the last time I looked through a telescope to actually look at the stars and the wonders contained within the heavens. I barely look through a finderscope. I'm missing out on so much. :(
Thanks!
Fahim,
Thank you, sir. :)

Hmmm?...Humayun!......:eyepop:
Niiiiice work that!
You "could" play with it a bit more if you like (?) but not sure what you could get out of it? As you say, some Ha might help bring out some more but it is mighty fine as is IMO

what an image ? And yesterday I posted my first attempt at the moon....I'm so embarrassed....
did you get one of those space visiting shuttle rides and got them to stand at one place for few minutes and grab that image....i just can't believe it....amazing.....
wait did I say what an amazingly beautiful image that is .... i think I'm gonna throw my dob and just follow your photos, I'll see more than what I'll see from my own 8" dob :D that too in color.....
I would certainly agree with everyone else in submitting your snap to any photo competition....you will surely be a sureshot winner.....
i'm going to save this image...its a stunner and a keeper.....
as i say it..... print it, frame it.... adore it
stunning shot nice colour and very sharp. well done.

Beautiful shot, well done!
Question from a newbie, what is the width of that shot in arc-thingo's?
Thanks,
Jason.

Ok,
I have been in this hobby / forum for a few years now and there have been some stand out / jaw dropping images that you open up the link and just stop what you are doing!!
This is one of them!
I was visually observing Alnitak the other night and to think of all the beautiful detail that is hidden to the eye!
Wonderful!

Sorry for the delayed response; been without the Internet.
Barb and David,
Thanks!
Eric,
I've been busy, and around. Things happening.
Not my setup -- it belongs to Zane at Magellan Observatory. He's kind enough to let me make use of his wonderful toys.
Cheers.
Franks,
Cheers!
Jase,
Thanking you. :)
mrsnipey,

geli2,

Mike,
I will try for some Hα as soon as possible and see what else can be brought out.
Thanks!
Rohit,
We all have to start from somewhere -- I'm constantly learning, myself. Everytime I capture and process, I learn something new.
Thanks for the kind words.
Phil,
Thank you, sir.
Jason,
I'm not 100% sure. Will have to get back to you on that one.
Cheers.
Geoff,
Why, thank you, kind sir. :)
Al,
Thank you!
David,
I always look forward to reading your comments whenever I post an image.
Thanks, so much. :)
