Nova Puppis 2007

The marked star is the only one that's in the rough vicinity and that I can't find in Starry Night. Can anyone confirm that this is the new nova reported in Puppis? I'm on limited internet till I get home and can't search for charts. Thanks.

14:24, 15 Nov 07 UT (12:23am AEDST this morning). Canon 400D on tripod, stack of 6 15-sec subs.

Back on the desktop now, & everything's so easy! I'm certain it is the nova now - have updated the pic with two extra stars labelled. The nova is smack bang between them - nothing anywhere near this bright is shown in SN, and the position (RA, Dec) is very good.

i think you need a keen eye and good memory to hunt down these objects, ive probably seen them before and never noticed..... interesting

Yep you have nailed it. It corresponds to the coords in StarAtlas Pro. Your picture aligned with Registar on a StarAtlasPro map.Note the coords at top left.

This morning I could not sleep so I went out to take this image (stack of 3 5-sec exposures and one 10sec, 400D, ISO1600, 18-55@55mm, f5.6). South is up.
It seems it brightened a bit.... if my id is correct (I used Rob's photo as a comparison)

Nice one Bojan! :thumbsup: I've had a good look at your shot, and I think that V597 Pup is the one I've marked on your photo - hope you don't mind me scribbling all over it! :P The rotation just helped me orientate things.

This indicates it appears to be fading, now possibly around mag 9.

I checked the magnitude with IRIS on original tiff pic... my estimation is ~8.3 +-0.5
Longer exposure should improve the accuracy.
