The prominence that looked like a curtain yesterday has developed again and a flame prominence has developed.

This image is a little darker than I would like, but I need it to be to prevent the grain from showing.

hmmmm... could you do series one day then make them into a miny movie given this is the same area as previous ?

Always interesting:)

Alchemy, I could do this, but I am far too lazy to do this. It would require putting the camera in the same place each time. Possible, but not likely. Maybe in the near future though.

Seems like you are the only one interested in solar imaging here. Not sure whether I will place many more solar images here.

youve had over 70 looks at it so people must be interested. possibly they are shy. if no-one had a look then, yep id give it a miss.
you could possibly vary how you present them photographically, also some such as jase when he puts up his shots gives us a lot of background detail and that scientific stuff which i always enjoy reading.
im happy to have a look :)

Sorry. I'm definitely interested in your solar shots. Don't always post, though.

Awesome shot!

How long does that "curtain" last?

That curtain lasted for 3 days. It was really nice in the end.

Does it just slowly (to our eye) leave the sun's surface and "disappear"? Did you look at it one day, and the next day it was slightly elevated than the day before?

Promiences slowly expand and some even expand before your eyes over 5 minutes, everything depends on what is forming them. They are formed in a variety of ways. A lot of which I am still trying to understand myself.

Most prominences I have seen only last a couple of hours and they collapse back down onto the solar surface. This prominence was a little unusual in that it lasted several days. The plasma that formed it has now collapsed down onto the surface again.

There are some types of prominences that can be released magnetically from the solar surface and will escape the solar gravity. This can happen in conjunction with coronal mass ejections or during really violent times near solar max from explosive flaree. X class flares can for prominences to release and escape the solar gravity.

So in terms of this prominence, I check each day on SOHO, I saw this prominence and it looked quite large, so I setup outside and there it was. I checked the sun the following day and the day after that. Each day it changed shape, the second day it was larger and the third day it was smaller and collapsing.

Hope that answers your questions.

Thanks Rumples! So much to learn!!
