Hi Folks,

Just thought I 'd drop in here & say G'day. I live in Cairns and recently purchased a Celestron GT4. Yes I know it's a small scope, but as I spend every 2nd weekend in what is usually a dark sky location, portability & ease of use were high on the list of priorities.

I read with interest the article on astrophotography & thought " The near-full moon is washing everything else out anyway, maybe I should try it"

WOW!!! Using a handheld digital still camera held up to a 20mm Plossl EP

See the result:

Thanks IceInSpace - I'm now hooked!!

WHOAH!!! What a BIG picture! Took 2 minutes to download.

I can see Copper Knickers easy.

Is that Debris left behind from the Appollo missions in the lower right Mare?

Ha ha, made ya look!

ah it is pretty big, 600k.. I didn't realise on the work infrastructure :)

FNQ, probably a good idea to crop out the wasted part of the image and reduce the quality a bit, for posting purposes.

Such as this, which is now 47k. I reduced it to 640x480, cropped the image and sharpened it a bit too.

Carn the BLUES!

Now Effy, Tony (Striker) is the one you really have to watch out for in here! The poor fellow is a bit funny in the grey matter department. He even built a replica of Dr.Who's Tardis in his back yard!

And be warned, there is another one called hOughy. Strange fellow that one.

You stick with me and you'll be alright alright alright alri alri a . . . . bzzzz click!

Welcome FNQ_view, good to see another far northener on the forum.
Cairns is my second home, although I spend most of my time up in Gove in the NT.
Where is your "Dark Site", near Cairns or further afield ?

I apologise for the image size if it was a problem - thats why I linked to it. I was just amazed at the quality of the untouched image. Single frame, no zoom, just focus & shoot.

My dark sky location depends on where the 4Wheel Drive Club goes on that weekend, But its usually a 100km plus west.

I'm going up near Cooktown this weekend.Hopefully find a good spot for the Conjunction? event in the western sky
