Prominences and disk detail 5 Nov 2007

Seeing was pretty ordinary today, and lots of cloud drifting around.

I did manage to get some data though and am happy with the results. This prom has some interesting movement in it. Spicules can be just seen in the surface detail too.

I'd like to be able to observe prominences like this one day! Any comments or suggestions on filters and/or set up?

To be honest, if you want to do viewing then the PST is a great starting point and most affordable. It will show you some surface detail too. Although double stacking it will give you a 0.6A scope which will give nice detail all over, albeit somewhat dimmer.

If you want to get serious then the Solarmax 60 0.5 double etalon is about the serious starting point. I just got mine and am impressed with the level of detail that the extra aperture affords.

I will eventually upgrade to a daystar filter with a 4-5 inches Tak. The reason being obvious. More aperture, better resolution.

Mike I have been working on a technique to make a consistent look. Although generally this a difficult area of any Ha image.

I guess you never know what the sun can do from one day to the next,.....or can you tell if a prominence is coming?

No prominences are a daily event. You can go to SOHO and it will tell you what is going on, and give some indication that a prominence is present. Other than that, looking is the only way I find out whether there is something worth imaging.:-)
