View Full Version here: : When observing, do you listen to anything?

I just mentioned that I listen to the cricket when it's on while I'm observing.
I've also listened to "War Of The Worlds".
(I even had Jeff Lynne's last album on once, while I was on the driveway).
So...when you observe, is it all peaceful and quiet, or do you sometimes have something playing in the background?

Only the frogs and the flying foxes. The kids are in bed, I've listened enough during the day. Ahhhhh the sounds of silence :D

Just the sounds of nature => ducks, bats, gnats, cars, drunk people, .... The normal stuff as you can see :).

Nothing playing in the background Greg,
Just the peace and quiet of crickets, gazillions of frogs down by the dam, sheep walking around (they sound noisy at night), neighbours bull mooing loudly, other neighbours cows mooing, dogs barking at the 'kapow kapow, boom, boom' of rabbit and fox shooters, and the back neighbour's horses farting long and loud.
(all true I am happy to say)
Don't ya love the country!

LOL lots!
I can't smell it. (well, the horses I can if I get up too close to the fence).
I really don't notice it. My friends in town notice it when they come out here though!

Boy, you Meade SCT guys sure leave yourselves 'open' don't you? :P :P  Of course I like the serenity of the night sounds. But, when you hear the screaming/screaching/barking sounds coming thru the trees nearby, of 2 or 3 unidentified animals, disputing what, I don't know, then it can be a little scary at times, :scared3: especially when there's only 1 or 2 viewing.
Then of course there's always the local 'hoons'. :driving:
Regards, L. :D

Yes, Queen to cover the motor noise. It's written in the stars:)

Never observe without my mp3 player blasting my ears off. The hong kong made ones arn't too loud but my american made ones have my ears ringing for ages after i've taken them off especially after a few hours of non stop Depeche Mode.

Silence is golden.. nothing like it when the kids are in bed.. except when I hear Abbey start crying and I know it's going to be followed by my wife calling for me to come inside and help :family:

Aint that the truth! It is a lovely sound when you hear it come to life.
Imagine a bit of classical music and with a press of a button, "presto" your waltzing with your telescope.

My favourite accompaniment to the stars is the calls of Mo-Pokes (nightjars) owl-like anyway. I absolutely love them litle critters :-) Like an aussie version of the cuckoo bird call.
I reckon hendrix's soaring stratospheric guitar solos is the best space music followed by Pink Floyd (especially for total solar eclipses- dark side of the moon) I have a mp3 version of Mike Oldfields version of the X-files theme - pretty nice space music.
We are usually trying to be very quiet due to usually being somewhere we are not supposed to be? sometimes?
Sometimes we hear the ungodly screams of the 'loon axe murderer' that can be disturbing!
Bats flittering and snapping is nice too.

I usually listen myself while talking to myself. I even answer myself.

I love the sound of the barking owls & the Dingos howling as the last 1/4 moon rises ....
That said, the blues & Pink Floyd rate highly in the musical stakes.

I love all kinds of music, usually loud, but somehow the sound of silence and natures creatures is the best when observing..:D

I meditate in which I am in a full state of concentration...I concentrate on the nights viewing session ahead.....no sounds can be heard whilst I am in this state.....until the wife calls out dinner is ready.
