Ulead lossless compression codec

Have just been reading Tony Gondola's Sky and Space article on the DMK21AF04.AS camera.

He refers to a lossless compression codec (from Ulead) which he says comes free with the camera.

I've plugged my camera in and searched all the codec lists without success.:(

Where is this codec hidden?

Anyone found it with their camera?

Would be great to save a 2000 frame AVI at 80,000KB rather than 600,000 in lossless compression.

I think you can find it just by searching the internet. I'm pretty sure it doesn't come with the camera (or at least, it didn't come with my camera). It may well come with the new ones.

My recommendation whether you take it or not is to avoid using any compression related codec, even if they say it is lossless. If you are compressing from 600K to 80K you are lossing data. You cannot get 60fps on anything bar the moon or the sun with the aperture you have. At best with your focal length at 10,000mm you might get 21fps. If you go down to 5-7000mm you might get 45fps of data, but the reduction in the image scale will mean getting the extra frames was for nothing.

The DMK worked fine on my old dell and just using the y800 codec. I could have done with more frames but without the light grasp you cannot get them.

Where this will come into play more is if you image at around 10,000 mm and above. The images displayed of Jupiter in the article were no where near that. So the loss of data cannot be determined.

If you are still determined to use the codec, it should be listed in the avi/codec selection panel in IC capture.

You might find though as Mike said, that older DMK's did not come with it. When I bought mine I had to download the adapter to use Y800. It is likely that this codec is now incorporated into the newer software. You have had your camera for some time now and I would think it would not be included in the package you received.

Have searched the codec panel high and low (again) and it's definitely not there.

I'd say you're right, and it ships in the more recent versions of the disc software.

I've seen it downloadable and it's not too expensive.

Might have a go...just to see how it performs.
