I've just finished reading "The Dawn of the Space age" article by Dave Reneke. Having been disappointed how most other Astronomy media have covered this I was not expecting much. But Dave top the lot, as in the worst. Other then Sputnik the Russians were barley mentioned even in the paragraph titled A list of firsts. Let alone Australia's or any other's efforts.

Fair go thats the way it reads everywhere... it is a case of passing on what the buzz is...or should it be that commentary could be more than that...monkey see monkey do

We have history and we have what spin is pushed at any particular time... jounalism should not rewrite history as determined by the spin by a power intent on erasing all other contributions to space history... Dave should not have fallen for the spin..but he did so he must live with it.

For me Russia was the power behind space exploration..I recall their sucess and USA's failures at that time.... we had a thing at school....

Russian blast off..4, 3, 2, 1 blast off

USA blast off 4,3,2,1 timber..

that was the way it was ...

failure to recall the way it was is poor reporting ..to call a poor account of history journalism is inept I recon...with out the k Dave.

People in glass houses should not throw stones slack is slack with or without the "K".

Private joke as I am the only one laughing.

Also of note in this article is the picture of a newspaper article about yuri gagarin's first flight in space, with the caption saying that "launch of Sputnik 1 made the front page of every newspaper". Must have been a tight squeeze! Gagarin went up in Vostok 1 I believe.

I thought Paul Mayo "Southern Skies revealed" was great.

Picked up a copy from a newsagent this morning - been looking for it for a week. Quick scan suggests much to interest me - I'm looking forward to a good read! :)
