Is This OK for a LMC widefield

Hi Guys, of late some of my images have been a bit noisy, and over processed, yep, I do get a bit carried away with all those buttons, sliders and stuff.

Any way here we have the Tarantula Neb and LMC taken two nights ago at about 3am, the image consists of 6 exp's @ 4 min's each with the Tak 106 and 5D, at ISO 400, Guided on G11 with Philips Toucam.

The Image has not been processed, other than aligned and stacked in Image Plus, and Auto clicked in Digital Development, thats it, no sharpening or any other stuff, and no cropping.

Please make comment either way, I can handle it. :P

You have heaps of data in there if that's an unprocessed stack!!!
The green of the LMC looks "fizzy" - reckon that's an artefact from the compression of the image for IIS.
Everytime I press the Auto button in ImagesPlus' Digital Development protocol, my images get very noisy - unusable! I tweak the bottom slider.
Even then, I hold back as when I import into PS the processed image from Images Plus looks noisier in PS than it did on the IP screen - not sure why!?

ps...how come you get such a wide field with the Tak at prime focus? The pic looks more like a 300mm lens shot...WOW!!!

I think you're on the right track there Leon. Certainly much improved processing techniques exhibited compared to your previous images. Keep at it mate.

Thanks Jase, I really have to do the processing in little steps, i tend to make pretty pictures instead of preserving all the data possible.

And Doug in answer to your question, the Tak has a 9 degree field of view, pretty wide, and sometimes it dose look as if it were through a long lens.

Nice detail Leon, but I think the composition could be better. It's a shame part of the LMC is cut off.

You've got the perfect FOV for a mosaic though! Go for it!

By Mosaic, I mean taking multiple images with slightly overlapping fields, and then join them together (in photoshop or other software) to create an image with a field of view much larger than a single image.

Then you can fit the whole LMC, Tarantula and surrounds in an image.

looks very nice Leon! well done! There is more data in the image than what is visible but you have captured a lovely image!
I agree with Mike, take a 2 image mosaic and you will fit the whole bar in!

Nice shot Leon. It is always hard to decide whether you have gotten the most from what you imaged. It would be interesting to see you do the processing again, but this time without clicking the auto-DDP. Or get a few others to process the stacked but non processed version.
I tend to agree with Mike sorry, frame it differently next time, or better still crack a mosaic.

Gary, i might take up that offer and let some one more experienced have a go at processing an image for me, i wish i could get a handle on that sort of stuff, but how do i get a huge file like that to some one else, is ther not a limit on what you can send over the net.

far from suggesting you lack the processing skills, far from it. More that processing and the end result is subjective, with as many variations as there are processors.
There was a proliferation of "process my image" recently, and while it can be boring, it is also good to see what others can do with your file. How big is the stacked but unprocessed file? It could even be worth getting someone close to where you are to try it.
Having said all that, the image is a stunner in it's own right, keep at it.
Think back 12 months and find an LMC shot you took then, see how it has improved.

Thanks Gary well thats is true what you have said about past images, there certainly is an improvement, and like all things it takes time, patients and experience which i feel i am slowly gaining.

I do happen to know some one close to me that could. and would help me if required.

leon fantastic image and without processing? :scared: there is no way in the world i can capture an image like yours with a black background. I don't see any light pollution issue you might be experiencing at all.

Thanks Eric, yep, green is right, but that is always the case with the LMC, for me anyway, and i do wonder if it is supposed to be that green.

Once the Observatory is repaired I will have ago with the Canon 300mm F/2.8 and see if i cant capture the whole thing in one frame, should look better that way.

That's a great field of view with the Tak Leon.

For an unprocessed image it looks real good. Look forward to other images of this area especially with the Tak.
