Hi all,, Just bought a new laptop with VISTA. Programs like Starry night pro and Startarg would not work, in fact Starrynight would not even load or install correctly. I tried a few things and eventually got it to work. Here's how:
On the install or setup file:
1. Right click the file and enter the compatability tab, select and check the XP compatability checkbox
2. select and check the run as administrator checkbox.
3. Apply changes and run the setup program as usual.
After install find the executable file and repeat the above process on this file.
Hope this helps some of you who are probably having the same problems I have had. So far every file or program I have had problems with have been fixed with this process.
Good luck
Doug:shrug:
Glad you got it sorted Doug, i wouldn't touch Vista for anything, it is a total disaster, and that is from people in the know.

I had a similar problem last night with a freshly downloaded copy of Starry Night 6 Download Edition on my Vista box with an ATI Radeon 9600 video card. It failed to run and crashed as it was building the databases. It complained about the lack of OpenGL too - but stated that it was OK to run without it - some features would be missing, that''s all.
I tried to alter the compatibility settings as Doug has mentioned, but it didn't work either. Same problem.
I then downloaded the ATI "Catalyst" program which includes the latest OpenGL-enabled drivers for ATI cards and ran it. Microsoft has not yet provided drivers, ex-Vista install, that allow OpenGL to function properly. I gues that OpenGL competes with DirectX, so of course they are slow to embrace the fact that people run OpenGL. The Catalyst install fixed this and provided a solution. ATI were the problem here, not Vista.
Starry Night 6 worked perfectly after this.
So - if you have an ATI card - go here and download Catalyst: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

LOL! That's probably not entirely fair Leon.:) You'll here that from some people "in the know", but certainly not all. Those same doomsdayers said exactly the same thing about XP when it came out... and Win '98 before that and Win '95 before that. I've run Vista for a year and have had no problems with anything other than Starry Night, and I use many different programs - most of which are high-demand graphics publishing systems. Considering that Google Earth uses OpenGL and runs beautifully, why doesn't Starry Night? Vista problem? Don't think so..... Writers of software that fails to run on Vista should have had their problems fixed a year ago. When Vista settles down I bet it becomes one of the more successful OS's.

Have never had any real issues with Vista as yet, some things need to be worked out, but that was the same as every other OS I have used also.

Thanks for the advise.
I just installed Starrynight Pro 5 on my Vista Laptop and it works fine after turning off Open-GL.

No Chris, it is an itegrated Intel 965 chipset and accelerator (Sony Vaio CR).
I have upgaded Starrynight to v. 5.82 and turned XP comatibility mode off.
It works fine but with openGL it still messes up.

Jakob - maybe try upgrading to v6.0.6? I know it's about US$150 for the Pro to Pro upgrade, which is pretty steep if you ask me, but it may solve everything for you. I was reading on CN that the 6.0.6 was meant to address some Vistal/OpenGL/SN compat issues.
A cheap way to find out might be to try the download edition at US$25 first like I have. Now that I know it's OK I'll go the Pro Plus and stick the Download Edition on my home system.

I have used Vista for 6 months or so and the only problem has been a supposed compatibility problem with a DVD program which still seems to work alright anyway.
