I went to the post office at lunchtime today, and found out that Australia Post have a released a set of stamps and a commemorative medalion, to celebrate 50 years in space. I couldn't resist, so I got a set and the medallion. :P

FYI. Sputnik 1 launched on October 4th, 1957.

Recall listening to it on a battery operated radio
from a tent on the Ufipa Plateau in what was then
Tanganyika, back then central Africa was a pleasant
and peaceful place to work and travel. Gerald.

50 years ago tomorrow. Good heavens! I was a high school sprog in those days but remember chasing the 'beep, beep' signals on the radio. It must have been on HF as we only had a normal radiogram in those days.

Watching it sweep across the sky was incredibly exciting at the time. Some months ago I watched the ISS for a few seconds (the gap between the trees and it being eclipsed) which brought back memories of ol' Sputnik. Mind you, the ISS was brighter by magnitudes.
