Where to get Pulley Wheels n Timing Belt

Hi All,

I am looking to put encoders onto my dob, and dont quite have the clearence under the scope. Hence I need to setup a pully system and timing belt to allow me to set the encoder to one side and have it tied to the shaft. Hence I need two pully wheels (toothed gears) and a toothed timing belt.

Wheels something like these...

I originally planned to get these from a remote control car shop.

Anyway I expected the pulley wheels to attach to the centre shaft via a gromet (clamping screw), however this is not the case.

Does anyone know of a better source of wheel which can be easily anchored to the centre shaft, or does anyone know how this sort of wheel is anchored to the centre shaft? Basically is this the right approach?

Wouldn't a wheel on the encoder, spring loaded against the large bearing ( perhaps wrapped with aluminium band ) work ok for digital circles?

They would work quite nicely...
Also you may consider just a (thin) steel rope wrapped around the wheel.. I bet even fishing string would do since there is not much load involved here.

I went and ordered a set of pully wheels and a timing belt from "Small Parts and Bearings". Great tip there Karl, on and off I have often looked for somewhere selling this kind of thing. So certainly one to remember.

Bojan and Mark, thanks for the alternative. I never even thought of that approach, well if the timing belt fails to work I know what to try next time.

With a bit of luck I should have my DSC attached some time soon....

It's in the US, but Stock Drive Products has a tremendous assortment of timing belts and pulleys for such uses. I used timing belts and pulleys of this sort for different application on a 'scope.

Also, I think the next generation of US Digital's encoders have a lower profile than the older models....
