Hi Guys,
I have a question from my sister, do any of you know when the next solar eclipse is due. One of the lawyers she works with was taking about a solar eclipse and she wondered whether one was due.
I think he may of meant the lunar eclispe and got his solar's and lunar's mixed. Either that or the Darwin humidity has scorched his brain a wee bit.:P

Full or partial? Viewing from where?

(I'll go have a look for viewing from Melbourne)

Russia/China August 2008, India/China July 2009. The next total solar eclipse in Australia is visible from Darwin through Cairns in 2012. The sun rises mid eclipse in Darwin, so the view there won't be that great.

I'm going to Cairns in 2012!

In February next year, there's a small partial for the East coast of Australia (Annular is in Antartica). There'll be some more info about that in the next month or so.

edit: Eric's right, it's Feb not Jan.

Doesn't seem to be a total from Melbourne before 2100 at least! Looks like I'll have to travel - North Qld - not too taxing!

However, a partial is coming up in Melbourne early next year - 7th Feb around 14:55. Hopefully I can try out my solar filter! :)

Nothing in Sydney? :(

The partial? - much the same as Melbourne's view next February, I believe.

A total eclipse - sadly, no way Jose!

Sydney is smack in the middle of a total in 2028. A bit of a wait, though ;)

Bit slow Skairey, you missed one yesterday!

Well, just a partial, and only visible from parts of S America, Antarctica, S Atlantic Ocean. :P

Began at UT 10:25 yesterday.

Cheers -

Part of the NSW/Qld border will get two eclipses in 2028 and 2030.

I hope to make the one in India in 2009-bad timing though monsoon activity could interfere..waiting for S &T and Astrnomy magazine to announce which country they are taking their eclipse tours to..hopefully those guys will do the homework

Here is some cloud info.

SW Mongolia has the least cloud but totality is only about 2 minutes.

The least cloud is south of Japan and totality is more than 6 minutes.
At the end of the eclipse the cloud is also low but the time is shorter.

We have "pencilled in" China for the 2009. I am waiting for Sky & Tel to post further information about an itinerary. I was in China in 1997 (Helen Wong's tour) and enjoyed it. By going with a astronomical group this time though I would expect we would see things my other tour didn't, as well as the usual stuff. I believe the itinerary is Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and eclipse.

My wife said she would love to go to China some time, so I guess this makes it pretty easy to get it past the minister for finance!

Thanks again. :face:

Definitely looking forward to that one. I guess I should start making accommodation arrangements etc. I guess people would be booking these things way in advance.

I doubt that local hotels etc would even have diaries or computer systems that would let them book that far into the future though :)

Hi all.

Yep, the best location for 2008 is western China. But if you haven't already booked your hotel rooms ... good luck! I've just returned from Jiayuguan, and it and the other cities in the area are fully booked by large travel companies. There might be some late cancellations, but I doubt it. And don't forget the Olympics start the following week.

2009 is looking messy. Most of the path will be in monsoon. I don't find 100% probability of cloud cover in eastern India very encouraging. I'm hoping to get to Iwo Jima.

For 2012, try to avoid Cairns. Good chance of cloud in the morning. Head inland, or go to the west coast of the Cape.

Looking ahead for AU/NZ:

2028 July 22: NW Aus, through central NT, then NSW to Sydney.
2030 Nov 25: Port Augusta, SA, into southern QLD.
2037 July 13: north of Perth, southern NT, Brisbane, NI NZ
2038 Dec 26: central WA, north of Adelaide, Murray River, Wellington NZ

Looks like a busy ten years to me ...

Steve.

I checked out the center line of the 14/11/2012 eclipse recently.
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2012Nov13Tgoogle.html
I think it might be cloudy on the coast. Oak Beach has several accommodation places but beware of the crocs and stingers.
The beach has a good view of the sun.
The Mossman - Mt Molloy road has trees along the center line but there is a lookout.
I am planning to stay at Mt Carbine because the road there runs parallel to the eclipse center line and it will be possible to move around to avoid cloud. The friendly Mt Carbine caravan park has some rooms and a powered site is currently $16/night.
http://www.mtcarbine.com/prices.htm
Maitland Downs Station is already expecting 40 eclipse chasers but the hills to the east may be a problem there.
Palmer River Roadhouse charges $16.50 for a powered site.
If you want something upmarket try Port Douglas. Bill Clinton's old room might be available for a small fee.

Glen,

Thanks for posting that amazing image. Interestingly he may of captured Comet C/2008 O1 (SOHO) in the image - there is a 9th mag starlike object next to mag 8 star at pixel 1145, 667 as measured with 0,0 at top left. This is exactly where the comet should have been. Congrats to Michal Kusiak for bring attention to this.

I've resized a crop from Miloslav's original image and on the right is the star field with the predicted position of Comet C/2008 O1 (SOHO) marked. What do you reckon?

I think you are on the right track , the eclipse will be very late in the day, near sunset , so if you are on the coast, all you'll like see is dark sky and clouds (and rain), on the other side of the tablelands is the go.

see: attachments. More likely to be cloud free on the day and rain free , .... are there any locals on this site who can check these sites out ahead of the event and report back. (It's a long way to travel to do a reccy for most of us , I'd be looking at driving from Newcastle and making a holiday of it .... what's the river fishing like in November on the coast ??).

The sun will be low over the western horison at totality.

This one should be very picturesque , Venus, Mercury and Saturn will be close to the eclipsed Sun.

I missed the TSE in SA (not long after Onesteel closed the steelworks), couldn't afford to get there ... I don't want to miss this one.

If the local accomodation , motels , caravan parks (rental vans and cabins) and hotels are all booked out , and I don't think west of the range there is a lot available, then one of those rental campervans might be an option , or a camp out somewhere on the track of totality if you have a campertrailer, caravan or tent would likely be OK , there must be lots of road side (unpowered and very primitive , reststops - camp areas along the roads in the area).

The eclipse is early in the morning, about 6:40 am.
The Sun will be about 13 deg above the horizon at totality.
There is a free camp ($2 donation) about 1 km north of Mt Molloy.

I'm located near Mareeba, and in the path of totality, i will check out next month on the 14th on the view to the east at 6.40am ( to see if the sun clears the Great Dividing Range)

glenc

It will be interesting to see if it is clear at Mareeba on the 14th and at other places in the eclipse path. The attached maps show the solar exposure for last year on 13/11 and 14/11. For Cairns the eclipse is at 6:39am on 14/11/2012 and the Sun is 14 degrees up.
Here is the path: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2012Nov13Tgoogle.html

Please report on the cloud near the Sun tomorrow morning at about 6:40 am if you live on the 2012 eclipse path between Cape Tribulation and Innisfail.
