This guy sells an adapter to use an SLR lens with a webcam for astrophotography.

Not sure (read this as 'not experienced enough to judge') if the webcam AVI's would be better than multiple multi-minute exposures with tracking, or better than multiple short (< 5 sec) exposures untracked.

Longer exposures with tracking is always better.

Those SLR lens adapters for webcams are mostly suitable for long-exposure modified webcams. That is, webcams that can do exposures of a few minutes long.

Check Ken's (ballaratdragons) deep-space images with his modified ToUcam. He used an ED80, but people have done similar things with an SLR lens on a modified webcam.

short exposure avis for planets and long exposures for everything else :)

I thought that several people on this forum would have seen this or done similar. :) a lot of experienced people here.

I am always impressed by the ingenuity of some people.

I have a number of those adapters to fit different cameras to EOS lenses, C/CS - EOS and SBIG (T)- EOS. To date, what mimimal time I have had to trial them they seem OK (You can either blame the weather or that I have too many other astronomy things to play with :P ). However don't expect them to work successfully if you are using a mono camera with a filter wheel, the lens may not come to focus as it is too far from the chip.

I just got one to suite some old Olympus lenses I had lying around. Works ok but focusing is really tricky compared to the motor focus on the scope. I had it mounted on a tripod and the jiggles made it really hard to focus and frame. I'm planning to try it on the GEM.

If you have a look at this thread (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=25345)I posted today the images were taken with an ATiK 16IC (basically a fancily modded webcam) and Steves EOS to T thread (suited to the SBIG but works well with the ATiK) and a 25-80 zoom lens. The exposures were around the 0.01sec mark. For what you want to do though, as Mike has said you will need to be able to go for alot longer
