Great to see the jets doing well in the early part of the season.
As a season ticket holder I love the A League but I understand it's not everyones cup of tea. Please don't be afraid to speak your mind. Just because I'm form Belfast I promise I won't blow you up for stating what you believe is the truth no matter how misguided.

I am not so familiar with the A-league...I assume that it is popular ?!?...soccer (English football) right?
When I first read the title of the post I was thinking that you were referring to the New York Jets of the Gridiron (American Football) NFL fame...since that season is just kicking off in the US...as a gridiron fan I was interested in the post...

Sorry to burst your bubble Scott but you are on the money, it's football with the round ball. Officially it's called football now in Australia to bring it in line with the rest of the world.
I see the most votes are for What is the A league.
The A League is an eight team football comp in Australia and New Zealand.
The table after three games stands thus
P=Played W=Won D=Drawn L=Loss F-Goals for your team A=Goals Agianst your team GD= Goal difference Pts= Points
1.Central Coast mariners P 3 W 3 D 0 L 0 F 5 A 0 GD 5 Pts 9:thumbsup:
2.Newcastle Jets P 3 W 1 D 2 L 0 F 2 A 1 GD 1 Pts 5:party2:
3.Adelaide United P 3 W 0 D 3 L 0 F 5 A 5 GD 0 Pts 3:P
4.Melbourne Victory P 3 W 0 D 3 L 0 F 3 A 3 GD 0 Pts 3:(
5.Perth Glory P 3 W 0 D 3 L 0 F 0 A 0 GD 0 Pts 3:sadeyes:
6.Queenslanr Roar P 3 W 0 D 2 L 1 F 3 A 4 GD-1 Pts 2:doh:

8.Wellington Phoenix P 3 W 0 D 1 L 2 F 2 A 6 GD-2 Pts 1:help:
I will upgrade the table after each round.
I hope this helps a little.
Gazz
I don't follow any particular team but I do enjoy a good game of football.
I wish they could put on a few games in Canberra then I could get along to them.

They sure were Ric but like all things if you dont have your downs you dont know your ups. Perth were good in the old NSL but have found it hard going in the HAL.
The Jets have a couple of games on the road the next few weeks. Sydney FC then the league leaders Centrtal Coast Mariners. I like these away matches as I can get to them in under 2 hours travel.

I know what you mean Gazz I've waited 10 years to see Manly have a start in a grand final.

It was a sad trip to Sydney for the Jets fans last week and this week wont be any easier as we are off to face the league leaders.
Good wins also by Melbourne, Wellington and Adelaide has tightened things up in the middle of the table. Should be a good weekend for football.

I was at last nights A league match at Energy Australia stadium. Sadly though the jets peppered Sydneys goal a few times we never got in, wheras eventually Sydney found the corner of Newcastle's, shot in from a mass of players vying for the ball right in front of Newcastles goal mouth. The hapless goalie never had a chance to move, and he vented his frustration kicking at the net at the back of the goal. That was the only goal in the match. Sydney FC 1 jets nil
Well the bell has tolled for Smithy at Perth, just heard on the news that he has got the chop from Perth management. I hope the Glory have a change of fortune for the remainder of the season.

I didn't think Smith had long to go before he got the chop.

The Jets just can't seem to win agianst Sydney, the Mariners had a good win agianst Melbourne,Queensland had a great win over Adelaide and the Phoenix done the poor Glory like a turkey dinner.
Tornado I had to take a bus load of teachers to Sydney yesterday, even so I'm banned from the Jets games for 4 weeks for refusing to comply with a police direction during the Phoenix home game so I should be able to get back to the ground in the no to distant future.

Perth had a great win over the jets. It's amazing how a change of coach can life a team. Melbourne and Sydney played out a boring Nil all draw, nice wins for Central Coast over Adelaide and Queensland over Wellington. The Central Coast are 6 points clear and you could throw a blanket over the next 5 teams. Looks like things are going to be fun as the last half of the season is well under way. Good to hear that a national youth league and a womens A league will be starting next year

I agree Ric. Things can only get better from here on. Good to see Aloisi get a good start to his HAL career. I hope more big names want to spend the last few years of their careers here. They wont need big money seeing they earn $100,000 plus each week in the giant European leagues.
Gazz
I agree Gazz, to get some big names like Kewell, Viduka or Emmerton playing a few years in the HAL would be fantastic with the skill and knowledge that they could pass onto the younger players.
Better still if they could take up coaching positions.

Numbers wise we are the largest of the winter sports codes and even with main stream media ignoring us totally or when they do report anything its always negative. Things are percieved to be looking good for the future of this great game. Buy in truth what we need now is security/police letting up on the fans a little. I can (sort of) understand trying to take out some of the passion on the pitch, but when they force the fans into not enjoying themselves too much it can only hurt the game. After last weeks home game agianst Perth I talked to at least a dozen supporters who said they wont go back to matches because of the way they were treated by security. Three of them are season ticket holders and have been ever since the HAL started. Ticket prices start at $19.00 at Energy Australia Stadium and the beers are $5.00 for a plastic cup. So there is a lot of money being spent to go and watch. My local club has big screen tv's and cocktails for $5.00 and the security there know who I and my friends are, so the don't give us grief. I love watching the game live but not at the expence of my friends and family being looked down upon and victimised by cardboard coppers. My friends were even being stopper by the police and having their soft drinks sniffed, even though they were over 18. If this is the way the club and the HAL want to treat their most dedicated fans, we will start to spend our hard earned somewhere else. From reading the papers on the cricket at the GABBA it seems like the same thing is happening there also. The trouble these days, sport is looked on as a business to make money, not a thing of passion and pride. The administrators of a lot of these codes have never been fans so they dont understand the hearts and minds of the grass roots supporters.
Sorry about the rant but I had tp get it off my chest,
Gazz
Perfectly understandable Gazz and I agree.
Supporters are the heart and soul of any club if you drive them away then you lose your financial support and when that is gone then the administrators are usually sacked for not making the club financial.
Therefore it is in there own interest to look after their loyal fan base.

The 1.8 million salary cap is no where near big enough to attract decent players here. Most of the south american players bought this year couldn't cut the mustard and have been sent home or only get half a game each week. What's the betting next year the HAL teams plunder Asia and Afrca for players.

The Glory are only one win away from getting out of bottom place. They seem to have turned things around with the help of their new coach. They have a very tricky home game agianst Melbourne next week, Central Coast play Sydney, Wellington play Adelaide and the Queensland Roar play the Jets. The Jets are one of three teams averaging less than a goal a game along with Sydney and Melbourne. Jardel has been a complete waste of money as far as I'm concerned and Danni hasn't been much better, we really miss Rodrigez and Nicky Carle. I hope the boys can turn things around next week, fingers crossed.

Gazz
you probably haven't received the letter yet - but i better tell you that because you haven't attended any of the last three astro nites here on the coast and you have failed to introduce several of our new attendee's to the hedgehog ritual
your passport to the gosford shire (sorry - CITY) has been cancelled
this means you will not be able to attend the game to-nite

Congrats Gazz, I see the Jets got the final spot in the semi finals last night. Melbourne and Adelaide came close but just got pipped at the post.
Cheers

Thanks Ric. We were lucky to get away with the win against Perth last night. The ref done us a favour with the dodgy send off.

Hey Gazz, do you think the Jets will go all the way and win the finals?

It would be great if they could. We went well last year only to be beaten by Adelaide in the final. Hopefully we can go one better this year.

Oh well, there is always next season.

Here is the final standings for the A-League season.
I think the central coast have been the best team team this year and deserve their first place.
It is great to see the Jets come in second, that will give us two bites of the cherry if we need it. I hope we don't...

Thanks Ric.
It doesn't matter how you get of the bottom place as long as you are off.
Funny how three of the four teams in the semi's are within 160 KM from each other. Central and northern NSW must be the capital of football in this country.
Gazz
True Gazz, nobody wants a wooden spoon in the trophy cabinet.
cheers
This thread has been going for ages, so it must be good, who are they, The Jets.
Leon
Hi Leon, that would be the Newcastle Jets football club or Soccer club as we Aussies call it.

I see Danny Tiatto got two weeks for his punch, I think he was lucky getting off so light.
Can you believe they are going to force the Central Coast or Newcastle to play the Grand Final in Sydney. Everyone from both teams hate Sydney, and I think it's a disgrace to force the teams that finish on top to play at the home of the team who finished third. What would happen if Adelaide won the Minor Premiership would they make them play in Perth or Melbourne? as Hindmarsh only holds 15.000 or so.
Rant over.
Gazz
That's the way of the media corporations Gazz, where is the best profit going to come from.
Look at the NRL Grandfinal, Melbourne was on top all year, wiped everyone in the finals and still had to play the grand final in Sydney and flog my beloved Manly. It's all about money i'm afraid.

Great 2-0 win for the mighty Jets. We have one foot in the Grand Final.
Gazz
Congrats to your team Gazz, it will be tough to knock them out from here. No taking it easy now though, just play their normal game and don't panic.
The other spot is still wide open though so that wil be an interesting game this weekend.

The wings fell off the Jets last night. Just as well we have two bites at the cherry. Congtats to the Mariners, they were the only team that looked like winning last night.

It will be getting a bit tense for you now Gazz, maybe a bead or two of sweat appearing. Do or die this weekend.

At the Jets home games they stop selling full strength beer at half time, but you can still buy spirits... can't for the life of me work that one out.
In Sydney they sell full strength beer until the bar closes, so who cares if it's warm. He he he

I've got a feeling it will be a tight game, I hope it doesn't end up in a penalty shootout. There is nothing worse.
Good luck to both teams.
