US retailers are listing the Ethos at US$620, just a tad less than the 31mm Nagler at US$640.

As Bintel sells the latter for A$880 I expect the Ethos will cost about A$855 here.

Wow, very interesting. I can't wait to look through one, but I very much doubt i'll ever buy one.

I'll stick with my 14mm XW for now, but I will go for a 31mm t5 in the future : )

Still would like to check one out all the same.

Great pricing, another thing i cant afford to buy.....:(

I'm in the crowd who would like to look through one but wouldn't dream of paying that much to own any single EP no matter how well reviewed. So I hope someone I know buys one soon.

For $855 I could have another two Pentax XWs and feel like I was getting a good bargain in comparison.

The silver lining is that the Ethos will flush a few type 4 Naglers into the used market - still a wad of money for these though.

Hey,

I said i couldnt afford to buy it, not that i wouldnt buy it ....:P

That's the spirit - it's only money :)

Maybe more type 5's of the 13mm variety? I've read the ethos is a little short on eye relief.

Bintel have it up on their website for A$869

Will someone from the Newcastle/Central Coast area please buy one of these (you know who you are!) and bring it to Kulnura! Please!!!

Unfortunately I couldn't justify spending that much on an eyepiece, but I'd love to look through one!

Hi Geoff,

If you don't need to wear glasses the eye relief on the ETHOS is excellent. I was able to easily take in the full 100deg FOV without my glasses on. Unfortunately it isn't for me as I prefer to wear my glasses when I observe and I prefer an AFOV around 70 degrees. The eye relief is just a tad short of being able to use it with glasses on and take in more than about 60 degrees AFOV. For those that don't need to wear glasses and like a wide AFOV the ETHOS is exceptional and worth every cent of its very high asking price IMO, if you own premium equipment. The eye relief on the ETHOS is slightly better than on the 13mm Nagler T6's.

Cheers

Damn you John, you are going to make me want one now
Seriously, thanks.

At that price level, I will be buying one in the next six months.

With a paracorr, it will be just at the right exit pupil to giving stunning views out of my scope with just the right level of contrast. Also, with the larger FOV, it will make an EP in the 17mm range largely redundant, saving me having to purchase the 17 Nagler.

Hold onto your hats, boys!! She's coming!

Rod,

May I suggest boiled rice and soy sauce as sustenance for the remainder of your vacation, to speed up the saving up process :)

Cheers

I am very supportive of your thought process Rodstar...I am confident that you need one of these for your scope...in fact, I would suggest that it would be a horrible offense to the Astro Gods if you did not do your duty and buy one now...I mean heck, you've got a great scope and not having the best glass to go with it would be a crime...after all, the eyepeice is a large percentage of your optical train what a waste your scope is without it!

Having said all of that, I am particularly interested in the value of the "bribe" needede to keep your signifigant other okay with this purchase...in case I need to do the same...

I, along with many others, anxiously await your purchase and can see no reason for your delay...get on with it man!

Hi Rod,

I've ordered an Ethos and expect to have it shortly. If you like, we could
try plugging it into your SDM 20" one night to see what you think of it.
After having used it in Texas and then in California last May when Al
Nagler had the first three pre-production proto-types with him, I am already sold.

Just let me know if this is of interest to you and we'll try and hook-up.

Best Regards

Gary,

I reckon that you are going to have a bunch of new best friends and relatives that you did not know that you had!

For the record, I am currently available to be adopted...:D

By all accounts it is a tremendous achievement in ocular science and enjoyable to use...I hope that you get many years of enjoyment out of it!

All the Best!

Hi Scott,

Thank you and we'll have to make sure you get a good look through it.

Totally agree with what an achievement for Tele Vue it is.

In his presnetation at the Texas Star Party, Al Nagler told us how the
eyepiece was a challenge put forth by David whilst Al was away from
the office in Chester for a while, and then fulfilled by Al's long-time
protégé Paul Dellechiaie. I think Al said David and Paul asked each other
what they could do as a special project and the answer was the 100 degree
effective field of view eyepiece. Al had some design notes I recollect dating
back to perhaps the 1970's for an eyepiece with a 100 degree effective FOV,
however, had never found the time to do the engineering.

With our own product having a name borrowed from Greek legend,
I told Al I particularly liked the name 'Ethos' and he laughed. He said they
were really proud of the name but that it probably took them longer to
come up with this great name than to design the eyepiece. :)

Anyway, it certainly is destined to become a classic in its own right.

Best Regards

No need to go to such extremes, John! :lol:The plan is to start saving now, putting away $50 per fortnight, and then closer to the time, sell the 22 panoptic and a few other items to make up the numbers.

Marital harmony is one very good reason, Scott, to do the good old fashioned thing, and save up! Pleased you are so supportive of the purchase, perhaps if I bring along a harmonica to the next Kulnura session and do some fund-raising busking, you might toss in a lazy $50 note (US currency, of course!).:P

Any idea when TV will actually ship to vendors?

For those trying to fund a purchase...I figured it's essentially ONE year of depriving myself of my daily cappucino. Bah, easy. I was excited.

This excitement was followed by discouragement upon learning that I was actually spending that much on processed caffeine milk...

I thought I read over at AMART that some had shipped in the US...at least one person was claiming to have one in hand...

I meant to ask when they are likely to be here in Australia while I was down at Bintel the other day but I got distracted by all of the other "shiny stuff" there and forgot to ask...

14-09-2007, 09:55 PM
Well, I couldn't resist. I ordered one through a US vendor. No confident word on shipping, but with luck I'll have it by new moon October.

And, heck, it wasn't that expensive with my creative financing arrangement...lotsa folks only have one kidney and they do juuuuust fine....

Ouch!! Or was it your wife's kidney that you sold?

I'm looking forward to having a peek through it, Scott my old mate and dearest friend (crawl.......)

It will be neat to compare the view thru our different scopes.

Just hope it arrives in my hands before my Wed flight home.

Clear sky here in Wisconsin now, a nice crisp early Fall day here. Had a frost last night, killed off all the sparrow-sized mosquitoes here, so I might sneak out to my club's site and regale everyone with Southern Sky experience stories...."You should see Omega Centauri...it's huuuuge..etc etc"

See you soon.

I have to admit I ordered one too. Expect a miscellany of other fine eyepieces to be advertised soon for sale.

Look forward to seeing you back on the right side of the world Scott.

Well, Phil, let's get our Ethoses (Ethoi?) together in a bino-viewer sometime...like in your bino-newt...and charge $5 for 5 minutes or something...that view would have to be wild.

and, yep, my 13 mm Nagler (old one) may well hit the For Sale Forum soon....

We'll need to charge $10 in that case - $5 per eye.
