Some 3 years ago, I purchased direct from Gung Ho Optics in China, (actually Zhitong Co Ltd) an "el very cheapo" EQ4 with dual axis driver and controller. I can't remember how much it cost, but it was very cheap, less than $100 for the lot. It was only ever intended for use with a small spotting scope, for visual use when camping etc. I don't think the controller ever worked properly, but the drive kept a star in view for 15 minutes or so, and as I had just purchased a Vixen GP and SS2K, I never really fussed about it, as I was busy playing with my other toy.

However, the controller doesn't work at all now, my grandson is now getting interested, and it would be nice to know whether the controller can be replaced or resuscitated. A fellow astronomer, who is an electronics specialist, has had a look, but is unable to help.

Can anyone offer some helpful advice for either repair or replacement?

Geez Mike, if an electronics specialist can't fix it, it doesn't sound promising. Maybe just buy another one if you can still get them for under $100. It could cost more than that to get it repaired!

A promising development. I had written to Zhitong in China, and have had a reply, wanting to know why it didn't work, so I have told him the story, and await a response. I'll let you know what happens.
